Pig breeding prices increase, farmers in Nghe An highlands change livestock farming

The price of piglets in Nghe An is increasing day by day. At this time, 20-30 day old piglets are being bought by traders for millions of dong each. Therefore, people in the highland districts are gradually shifting from raising pigs for meat to raising piglets.

Yen Thanh village, Luc Da commune (Con Cuong) has 165 households, 730 people living mainly by production and animal husbandry. Village chief Luong Thi Hiep said that most of the families in Yen Thanh village raise pigs or cows, most of which are pigs for meat and breeding pigs. Currently, about 80% of the households here have sold all the piglets and are preparing for the new batch.

“The price of piglets is increasing every day, reaching the highest level in the past few years, so people are actively switching from raising pigs for meat to raising piglets to sell piglets. At the end of 2024, I sold two litters of pigs for more than 50 million VND. This year, I am maintaining 2 breeding pigs to switch to raising piglets,” said Ms. Thanh.

Not far from Mrs. Hiep’s house, Mrs. Vi Thi May’s household has just sold a litter of 12 piglets, earning more than ten million VND. Mrs. May still has two litters of piglets in the “lactation” period, being cared for with cooked food, supplemented with bran and fish protein. Mrs. May plans to sell the remaining two litters of nearly 20 piglets in about 2 weeks and continue to raise a new batch.

Similarly, in Son Ha village, Tam Quang commune (Tuong Duong), since the beginning of 2025, when the price of piglets has been constantly increasing, Ms. Lo Thi Banh has switched from raising and selling pigs for meat to raising piglets for birth, selling piglets and providing pig breeding services.

“I just sold 2 litters of piglets over 1 month old for 1 million VND each. I currently have 1 litter of piglets less than 1 week old and 2 male pigs. The price of piglets has increased, many households have switched to raising piglets, so the demand for pig breeding has also increased more than usual,” said Ms. Lo Thi Banh.

Officials from the Tam Quang Commune People's Committee said that the entire Tam Quang Commune is currently maintaining a herd of more than 2,500 pigs. Traders are stepping up purchases of piglets at quite high prices, with many households selling them for 1.2 - 1.4 million VND/pig weighing about 10kg.

Currently, the price of piglets is increasing, so farmers in mountainous areas are gradually shifting from raising pigs for meat to raising and selling piglets, with a rotation cycle of 2-3 litters per year, both to recover capital faster and avoid risks.

Nghe An currently has a total herd of over 1 million pigs, which is an important source of income for the livestock industry. However, African swine fever is at risk of breaking out, and the disease has appeared in some localities in the province. Therefore, local agricultural service centers are actively advising people to strengthen disease prevention and control for livestock, increase supplementary feed and fully vaccinate, especially for newly born piglets.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine also recommends: Farmers need to comply with local regulations and instructions on protecting livestock and preventing the risk of disease spread. For herd expansion and herd restoration, farmers should buy piglets of clear origin and check the health of piglets before buying.

During the raising process, it is necessary to fully vaccinate against diseases. Limit outsiders, especially traders buying pigs, from entering the barn area. During the care period, limit the use of pond water and food of unknown origin. Regularly spray chemicals to disinfect and treat the environment inside and outside the barn area.
