Steel price today May 23: Iron ore price slightly decreased

Dalian iron ore futures traded in a narrow range as investors weighed strong demand for the steelmaking ingredient in top consumer China against rising exports from top producers Australia and Brazil.

Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for December 2025 delivery fell 2 yuan to 3,078 yuan/t.

Dalian iron ore futures traded in a narrow range as investors weighed strong demand for the steelmaking ingredient in top consumer China against rising exports from top producers Australia and Brazil.

The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) ended the day's session up 0.14% at 727 yuan ($100.93) a tonne.

Benchmark iron ore for June delivery (SZZFM5) on the Singapore Exchange fell 0.56 percent to $99.25 a tonne.

Steel price today 235 slightly decreased

End-user demand remains strong, especially in the manufacturing sector, which continues to drive high growth in steel consumption, brokerage Galaxy Futures said in a note.

The capacity utilization rate of 104 electric furnaces rose 1.2 percentage points from the previous week to 40.4%, while daily scrap steel consumption recorded a weekly increase of 3.1% to 245,400 tonnes, consultancy Hexun Futures said.

Hot metal output, often used to gauge iron ore demand, remained high this week at 2.4477 million tonnes, according to brokerage Everbright Futures.

Furthermore, total imported iron ore inventory at 47 ports in China was 146.28 million tonnes, down 1.74% from the previous week, Hexun said in a separate note.

On the supply side, total iron ore shipments from miners in Australia and Brazil rose 11.7% week-on-week to 27.1 million tonnes, according to consultancy Mysteel.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE fell, with metallurgical coal and coking coal (DCJcv1) down 1.66% and 0.85%, respectively.

Meanwhile, China exported 447,800 tonnes of stainless steel in April, marking a 14.1% year-on-year increase, Mysteel said in a separate note, citing data released by the General Administration of Customs (GACC) on May 20.

Benchmark steel futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange were little changed. Hot-rolled coil edged up 0.09% and stainless steel edged up 0.04%, while rebar edged down 0.03% and wire rod (SWRcv1) fell 0.06%.
