According to Kitco News, after experiencing an unprecedented price surge at the beginning of the year, followed by extreme volatility and now a period of stability, gold is fulfilling its role by continuing to assert its position as an important monetary asset in the global economy.
According to Incrementum AG's annual report "In Gold We Trust," lead authors Ronald-Peter Stöferle and Mark Valek explain that the historic surge in gold prices was not an unusual speculative phenomenon but part of a broader trend of remonetization, driven by geopolitical fragmentation, de-dollarization, inflationary volatility, and increasing distrust in fiat currencies.
"The future of currency lies in its past; gold as a monetary anchor is becoming increasingly important as the post-1971 fiat currency system shows 'clear signs of fatigue'," the authors describe.
The report notes that gold prices reached a record high of $5,595 per ounce in January 2026 after rising 64.4% in 2025 – the strongest annual performance since 1979.
Analysts also note that both gold and the "In Gold We Trust" report have made significant strides over the past 20 years. Despite the metal's strong growth, the authors suggest that the long-term bull market is far from over.
"The golden decade declared in the 2020 In Gold We Trust report is in full swing. Since then, the price of gold has risen 165% in USD terms," the report stated.
Analysts say the market is in the midst of a public participation phase, which they describe as “the longest and most dynamic phase of a bull market.” With a solid long-term foundation, fund managers at Incrementum AG have revised their long-term price outlook.
"Our target of reaching a gold price of $4,800 by 2030, as outlined in our 2020 report, 'In Gold We Trust,' has already been achieved in 2026. Now, we are shifting our attention to a different inflation scenario: a gold price of $8,900 by the end of this decade," the analysts said.
Although the long-term trend for gold is built on solid ground, Incrementum warns investors that the upward path may still be volatile.
"Gold will temporarily calm down in the short term, tend to rise higher in the medium term, and return to a central position in the monetary system in the long term. By early summer, we predict gold prices will fluctuate sideways in the range of $4,500 - $4,950 per ounce," analysts said.
