World oil prices today August 18
On the morning of August 18, world oil prices continued to decline after many political fluctuations between the major powers. On the Oilprice exchange, Brent fell by 0.36 USD to 65.49 USD/barrel, while WTI fell by 0.31 USD to 62.49 USD/barrel. This is the longest decline in more than a week, causing Brent oil prices to lose about 5.35% and WTI to lose 5.17% compared to last month.
The August 15 meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to reach a ceasefire agreement. Although the two sides agreed to work towards a peace treaty, no specific document was signed. Afterwards, Mr. Trump announced a temporary suspension of tariffs on countries such as China - countries that import oil from Russia. This move kept Russian oil supplies stable, but also created additional downward pressure on prices.
According to analysts, the market is currently awaiting the results of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky taking place today, August 18 in Washington. European leaders are also invited to attend, causing investors to closely watch.
Ajay Parmar (ICIS) believes that the impact of the temporary tax suspension agreement is only short-term, and oil prices may decrease slightly and then move sideways. Giovanni Staunovo (UBS) believes that the risk of supply disruption from Russia is still under control, while Phil Flynn (Price Futures Group) predicts that oil prices will likely fluctuate in a narrow range until there is a clearer agreement.
