The Southeast Asian Men's Football Championship was established in 1996, named after its sponsor, the Tiger Cup. The tournament held in Singapore had the participation of 10 teams: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Vietnam team won the number 1 tournament in Southeast Asia in 2008 and 2018.

2004 was the last time the Southeast Asian Championship was called the Tiger Cup. After the Tiger Cup, the Southeast Asian Championship was called the AFF Suzuki Cup until 2020. After that, the No. 1 tournament in Southeast Asia cooperated with Mitsubishi Electric to change the name of the tournament to the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup. According to the plan, the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 will be held from November 23 to December 21, 2024 with a home-away format.

In the history of the tournament, Thailand is the most successful team with 7 championship titles, Singapore is in 2nd place with 4 championship titles, and Vietnam is in 3rd place with 2 championship titles.

According to AFF, the Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship will also be renamed the ASEAN Women's Championship. Notably, the tournament will have adjustments to the competition format when AFF decides to organize the qualifying round and the final round. Detailed information about the competition format of the ASEAN Women's Championship 2025 will be updated by AFF in the near future.

At the club level, the 2024/25 ASEAN Club Championship will be held for the first time in a home-away format. The qualifying rounds are scheduled to take place on 17 and 24 July 2024. The group stage will be divided into five matchdays from August 2024 to February 2025. The semi-finals will be held in April 2025 and the final will be held on 21 May 2025. The youth tournaments at the U16 and U19 levels will be held mid-year in June and July 2024, hosted by Indonesia. The Futsal and Beach Soccer tournaments will be held in Thailand in May and November 2024 respectively.

Currently, AFF is taking time for member football federations to calculate, plan to register to participate and prepare for the 2024 season.
