The ASEAN Eco-Schools Vietnam Award 2025 is organized to connect, arouse green awareness and action among the generation of students at schools - future environmental ambassadors.
On the morning of September 19, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment held the launching ceremony of the ASEAN Eco-Schools Vietnam Award 2025 with the theme "Schools without plastic waste", aiming to create motivation for many initiatives to protect the school environment, forming a comprehensive green education system.
The above event is the opening activity for the series of events of the ASEAN Eco-Schools Awards Vietnam 2025, following the success of last year's season with 12 schools honored as "ASEAN Eco-Schools."
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Le Cong Thanh said that in recent years, Vietnam has implemented many policies and initiatives to reduce plastic waste, including the "Anti-plastic waste" movement launched by the Government.
With its functions and advantages, in recent times, the agricultural and environmental sectors, together with the education sector, have also closely coordinated to build green school models, incorporating environmental education, circular economy , and sustainable consumption into the curriculum.
According to Mr. Thanh, education plays a particularly important role in the journey of sustainable development. Schools are not only places to impart knowledge but also places to inspire, contributing to the formation of personality, awareness and responsibility of the young generation towards society and the environment.
In particular, students play a particularly important role in environmental protection. Students not only directly carry out specific actions in daily life to protect the environment (such as saving electricity and water, limiting the use of plastic products, sorting waste, participating in tree planting activities); but also become effective propagandists, spreading environmental protection messages to family, friends and the community, becoming positive role models, motivating adults to think and act for the environment.
Therefore, with the theme "School without plastic waste," Mr. Thanh emphasized that this is not just a slogan, but a strong call to action in the context of plastic pollution being a global environmental challenge.
"Vietnam in particular and ASEAN countries in general are facing great pressure from plastic waste, directly affecting the ecosystem, public health and the future of future generations," Mr. Thanh emphasized.
On that basis, Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh requested the award's standing units, the Department of Education and Training, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of localities to actively and proactively coordinate with news agencies and newspapers to inform and promote the Award to all schools nationwide; especially schools in remote, border and island areas to ensure that all schools in Vietnam have the opportunity to participate in the award.
As a school that was honored as “ASEAN Eco-School” in 2024, Mr. Phan Anh - Principal of Genesis Secondary School Hanoi, gave an inspirational speech about the journey of building a green school, spreading green habits to each student, parent and community.
Mr. Phan Anh emphasized that the first prize of “ASEAN Eco-School” that Genesis won last year was not only a source of pride but also a reminder of the responsibility to persistently cultivate sustainable habits. “Changing environmental protection habits is like learning to write with the left hand, it is difficult at first but with patience it will become natural,” the Director of Genesis Education System shared a vivid reality.
According to Mr. Phan Anh, the spirit of an ecological school lies in the daily responsible actions of teachers and students: From the Family Tree project to plant more than 70 trees, regulations to limit single-use plastics, to recycling discarded items into school supplies or works of art.
The school also maintains “Energy Saving Friday” with 9 specific actions, organizes ecological school gardens, second-hand fairs, waste battery collection, green startups and microplastic experience classes. Each activity aims to foster the belief that “small actions can make a big change.”
At the end of his speech, Mr. Phan Anh sent the message: “Protecting the environment is not a distant dream. Don’t wait for perfection to start, but start with small things today to move towards perfection tomorrow.”/.
The ASEAN Eco-School Awards 2025 event gathered about 11,000 delegates with more than 400 connecting points, affirming the attractiveness, significance and urgency of building a green educational environment. The activity is considered an opportunity to connect, arouse awareness and green actions in the student generation - the future environmental ambassadors. Starting from small things: Sorting trash, collecting plastic waste, planting more trees - are the seeds that sow the seeds for the future. | |
