TP – The race for the championship title at the 2024 National Golf Championship, VinFast – Hai Phong Cup, is considered highly unpredictable because it is not only a competition for the country's top golfers, but also attracts the participation of seasoned veterans and rising young talents in Vietnamese golf.
A gathering of talented individuals.
In the men's category, defending champion Nguyen Nhat Long is the top contender for the title. Last year, Nhat Long created one of the most dramatic and intense competitions in the tournament's history against strong contender Nguyen Anh Minh, who was then the defending champion. Ultimately, with his composure, coolness, decisiveness, and precise shots, Nhat Long won with a score of -4 strokes, just one stroke better than Anh Minh's.
Nhat Long marked a significant milestone by officially turning professional after becoming a national champion. Over the past year, Nhat Long has consistently honed his skills, trained regularly, and competed continuously in domestic and international tournaments, quietly and diligently. Therefore, fans are undoubtedly eagerly awaiting the performance of the 2003-born golfer at the 2024 National Golf Championship, VinFast Cup – Hai Phong . Besides Nhat Long, top Vietnamese professional golfers such as Truong Chi Quan, Nguyen Huu Quyet, Do Hong Giang, Doan Van Dinh, Dinh Song Hai, Tang Nhon Phu… in the men's category, and Ngo Bao Nghi, Nguyen Thao My, Nguyen Thi Van Anh… in the women's category, are all participating in this year's tournament.
The focus of the domestic golf community is currently on the 2024 National Golf Championship, VinFast – Hai Phong Cup, which is set to kick off at Vinpearl Golf Hai Phong on August 14th. After the organizing committee finalized the registration list, 150 golfers participating in this year's championship have been revealed, including 120 male athletes (81 professional, 39 amateur) and 30 female athletes (9 professional, 21 amateur).
Besides seasoned and experienced golfers, the 2024 National Golf Championship, VinFast-Hai Phong Cup, also attracts a host of stars from the national golf team. In the women's category, defending champion Le Chuc An will participate with the goal of defending her title. Chuc An will have to compete against other prominent female golfers from the national team such as: 2022 national champion Doan Xuan Khue Minh, Nguyen Viet Gia Han, Anna Le, and Le Thi Thanh Thuy.
Meanwhile, the men's section features many national team members such as Ho Anh Huy (2024 Lion City Cup individual gold medalist), Doan Uy (2024 National Junior Amateur Champion), Nguyen Duc Son (2023 Tien Phong Golf Championship Champion), Nguyen Tuan Anh (winner of stages 2 and 6 of the 2024 VGA Junior Tour), and Nguyen Dang Minh (SEA Games 32 men's team silver medalist). In total, 23 members from the Vietnamese national golf team will participate in the championship race taking place from August 14-17 at Vinpearl Golf Hai Phong.
An unpredictable race
The most regrettable absences at the tournament belong to the men's individual gold and bronze medal winners at the 32nd SEA Games, Le Khanh Hung and Nguyen Anh Minh. These two top amateur golfers from Vietnam are currently on a tour in the US and will participate in the prestigious US Amateur 2024 tournament held at Hazeltine National Golf Club from August 12-18, coinciding with the 2024 National Golf Championship, VinFast Cup – Hai Phong.
Commenting on this year's season, Mr. Vu Nguyen, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Golf Association, said that this year's race will be very balanced and difficult to predict who will win. The absence of Anh Minh and Khanh Hung, along with the fact that the defending champion Nguyen Nhat Long has turned professional, promises to be a great opportunity for professional golfers to compete and lift the championship trophy, after the last two seasons where victories went to young amateur golfers.
“Our golf development lagged behind other countries in the region, and currently we only have young amateur athletes who are receiving proper training and guidance. In recent years, these golfers have grown stronger and surpassed their professional predecessors. However, in the coming years, as our young athletes transition to professionalism, Vietnam will follow the global trend of professional golfers being the best in the country and the most welcomed,” Mr. Vu Nguyen shared.
