Rebar futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for May 2025 delivery fell 90 yuan to 3,552 yuan per ton.

Iron ore futures prices surged as some investors liquidated long positions to lock in profits, with some analysts saying China, the top consumer, fell short of expectations when it announced more aggressive stimulus measures at a press conference.

China's most actively traded January iron ore contract, DCIOcv1, on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE), fell 2.37% to 783.5 yuan ($111.15) per ton.

Prices hit their highest level since July 8th at 844.5 yuan/tonne early in the session, driven by hopes of more stimulus measures.

The benchmark November iron ore price SZZFX4 on the Singapore exchange fell 4.97% to $105.25 per ton, its lowest level since September 30.

Prices reached their highest level since June 3rd at $115/tonne earlier in the day; they rose 2.5% as the Chinese market closed for a holiday.

China is "fully confident" of achieving its full-year economic targets, a state planner said at a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

Pei Hao, an analyst at international brokerage firm Freight Investor Services, said: "The long-awaited conference this morning did not give the expected signal of a stronger stimulus package. As a result, some (traders) have partially liquidated their long positions to take profits."

A series of monetary easing policies and real estate stimulus measures in the world's second-largest economy over the past two weeks has caused the price of a key steelmaking component to rise by more than 20%.

Chinese home sales have risen following a series of real estate stimulus measures aimed at boosting the country's struggling property market since late September, state media reported on Saturday.

In addition, moves by Chinese regulators to urge financial institutions to strengthen internal controls on leverage and prevent bank loans from illegally entering the stock market also put pressure on overall sentiment.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE erased earlier gains, with DJMcv1 coking coal and DCJcv1 coking coal falling 0.77% and 1.61%, respectively.

The gains for steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange narrowed significantly. Rebar SRBcv1 rose 0.43%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 gained 1.07%, and stainless steel SHHSScv1 increased 1.6%. Bar SWRcv1 surged 8.1%.
