His gentle smile, warm eyes and slow voice are still here. Just a few weeks ago, his brothers, students and friends were still sitting together listening to him talk, still hearing his concerns and unfinished plans.

But now, Professor - Doctor Dang Luong Mo has passed away, leaving a void that is difficult to fill in the hearts of those who loved and respected him.

From student Kien An to respected teacher

Professor Dang Luong Mo was born in 1936 in Kien An, Hai Phong, in a Catholic family from Bac Ninh with a tradition of learning. He and his family migrated to the South in 1954 and settled in Saigon.

He soon showed his excellent academic ability, passing the entrance exam to the School of Technology Engineering, Phu Tho National Technical Center (currently Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University).

In 1957, at the age of 21, he received a full scholarship from the Japanese Government , becoming one of the first Vietnamese students to study electronics at the University of Tokyo, one of the top universities in Asia.

He completed his doctoral thesis in science and worked as an expert at the Central Research Institute, Toshiba Corporation.

Although he became famous abroad, his heart still turned to his homeland. In 1971, he returned to Vietnam to teach at Saigon University of Science and Phu Tho National Technical Center.

He successively held the position of director of the School of Electricity, and then in 1973 became the director of the National Academy of Technology (formerly the Phu Tho National Technical Center).

During those turbulent years, he still quietly devoted himself to higher education, without making a fuss, working with the belief that knowledge would be the path to development of the country.

Sowing the seeds for the young generation of scientists

After 1975, he returned to Japan, continued his research at Toshiba and then was a professor at Hosei University (Tokyo) from 1983 to 2002; during these days, he still yearned for Vietnam.

Since the late 1980s, he has been campaigning for scholarships and equipment from scholarship funds and cooperation programs in Japan to support domestic universities.

Dozens of lecturers at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology at that time were connected by him to study in Japan. Since those days, he has quietly sowed the seeds for a generation of young scientists.

In 2002, after returning to settle down in the country, without resting, he immediately started working, teaching, consulting, building training programs, and connecting with experts.

As an advisor to the director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, he laid the foundation for the establishment of units and training programs on microelectronics at Ho Chi Minh City National University. In addition to Ho Chi Minh City National University, he also participated in teaching, scientific criticism and support for many other universities.

He also contributed to the activities of Ho Chi Minh City High-Tech Park, which laid the foundation for the domestic semiconductor industry.

As the country strives to deeply participate in the global semiconductor supply chain, he seems to have regained his youth. He has actively participated in advisory groups, contributing many specific ideas to strategies and practical implementation activities.

His tireless activities contributed to forming the initial foundation for the development of the microchip - semiconductor industry in Vietnam.

An exemplary teacher, a kind intellectual

Although he taught in Tokyo, was honored in the US and Japan, and was a member of prestigious academies, he was always modest and approachable. He spoke softly, sometimes jokingly, but always exuded the depth and composure of an experienced person who understood life and people.

Professor Dang Luong Mo has been awarded many noble titles. But for him, the thing he is most proud of is his students who continue his path, his colleagues who love their profession, and his companions who share his belief in knowledge.

He has passed away, but he left behind not only his works, articles, and books, but also his personality. A Vietnamese intellectual personality who is patriotic, simple, profound, and devoted to education and to future generations.

Farewell, teacher, with all my respect and regret.

Love culture and struggle with Vietnamese language

Besides being a scientist, Professor Dang Luong Mo is also a cultural intellectual. He is passionate about calligraphy, semantics, and has in-depth research on Chinese and Vietnamese.

He often points out common mistakes in the way modern Vietnamese people use words, analyzing the origin of Sino-Vietnamese words in a sharp but easy-to-understand way.

He once said: "To be solid in science, one must first understand one's own culture and history."

His academic thinking is always linked to national cultural identity, a valuable thing for scientists and technicians.

With this cultural trait, in addition to hundreds of research works and scientific publications in international journals, he also left behind many valuable books, slices of intelligence and soul.
