According to Emirates News Agency and Vietnam News Agency, the UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) recently said that more than 1.4 billion network accounts worldwide are hacked every month, and warned about increased risks related to protecting personal information online.
Every login, post or interaction online leaves a trace that can be exploited, the CSC said. The agency identified two types of digital traces: passive traces and active traces.
Passive footprinting is the tracking or collection of data on websites or applications without the user's knowledge, while active footprinting is intentionally created by the user through images, videos , comments, and posts.
The council noted that poorly secured data can lead to risks such as privacy breaches, account hijacking, fraud, and even identity theft.
The agency also warned that unofficial or untrusted apps often pose a high level of risk, with the ability to record calls or access cameras without the user's knowledge.
CSC also recommends that users only download and use software from official app stores, review app permissions, use two-factor authentication, and be cautious when sharing personal location and accepting friends.
The security agency stressed that information security depends not only on technology but also on personal awareness. Each user needs to take responsibility to limit their digital footprint.
The CSC's warning is part of its "Cyber Pulse" campaign, which aims to raise awareness about cybersecurity every week, with the fifth week focusing on the dangers of failing to secure one's digital footprint.
