Hoi An ancient ship 'disappeared' again after a few hours of being discovered on the sandbank

On the afternoon of November 8, the Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Conservation Center met to discuss protection plans and make a report to the Da Nang City People's Committee to continue researching the ancient ship that recently surfaced on the coast of Hoi An.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Bui Van Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoi An Tay Ward (Da Nang City), said that after receiving information about the reappearance of the ancient ship, the ward and the Hoi An World Cultural Heritage Conservation Center have come up with a plan to protect the original state at the location where the ship surfaced.

Ancient ship buried under sea water again

The incident was also reported to the leaders of the People's Committee of Da Nang City. The city leaders have scheduled an inspection to assess the current condition of the ship and calculate an appropriate handling plan.

Tuoi Tre Online ’s record at 3:30 p.m. on November 8 showed that there were almost no traces of the wooden boat at the location where it appeared that morning. High tide caused the entire scene where the boat was recorded to be submerged under water. Many curious people who came from afar to find it also returned disappointed.

The Chairman of Hoi An Tay Ward said that in the afternoon of the same day, the authorities came to work and organized to protect the scene, but traces of the ship also disappeared under the sea.

On social networks, many people shared images of the shipwreck and expressed curiosity and surprise, saying that many features of the ship's shape and structure showed that this was an ancient ship that sank hundreds of years ago.

Many people said they were looking forward to the excavation by the authorities to bring it back for display and research to clarify.

However, local leaders and conservation agencies said caution is needed; excavating and bringing the ship to the surface is not simple because the ship is very old and lies under a deep layer of sand.

Mystery of the ancient ship that surfaced in Hoi An

As reported by Tuoi Tre Online , on the morning of November 8, some people in the Cam An beach area, Hoi An Tay ward, were walking along the beach when they were surprised to see the wooden shipwreck floating almost completely on the sand.

At this time, the tide was low, making the shape of the ship very clear. People reported it to the authorities to verify.

Notably, according to many locals, the wooden ship that appeared at Hoi An beach is the same ship that had surfaced in some parts and attracted public attention since the end of 2023.

By early 2024, the Hoi An World Heritage Conservation Center reported the results of research on the ship conducted by this unit in collaboration with experts from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University).

The report said the sunken wooden ship was large and of strong construction, combining Southeast Asian and Chinese shipbuilding traditions. It was made from Lagerstroemia and Euphorbia wood from Southeast Asia and Chinese pine; and was sealed with a sealant to prevent seawater from entering.

According to scientists, the structural features of the ancient ship allowed it to undertake long voyages such as commercial activities at sea or even naval battles. Scientists also determined that the ship was likely over 17.8m long with about 12 compartments.

Regarding the age of the ship, although there has been no absolute dating result so far, the data shows that it is highly likely that the ship dates from the late 14th to the 16th century. Notably, scientists believe that it could be an ancient ship treasure because it was discovered in an almost intact state.
