The project aims to preserve, select and provide access to rare Vietnamese manuscripts, texts and visual materials using advanced digital tools.
Comprising Digital Humanities in the Context of Vietnamese Studies and Applied Digital Humanities in Vietnamese Studies, the project has evolved into a dynamic platform that connects traditional research with computation, visualization, and artificial intelligence.
This new direction allows the project to explore how AI can help interpret, generate, and “converse” with cultural data, turning cultural data into living conversations rather than just static collections.
Ongoing goals include: developing AI tools to analyze text and images from Vietnamese sources; applying generative AI in cultural reconstruction and visualization; training a new generation of scholars who understand both culture and technology (programming skills); researching ethical and copyright issues in the AI era.
In addition, under the agreement, the two schools will pursue opportunities to promote joint research between faculty and students, co-organize academic discussions and conferences, host international scholars, and develop new programs in the fields of technology, humanities, and social sciences .
The two sides are working towards establishing a Global Vietnam Center at Columbia University, which is expected to become a space connecting research activities and dialogue on contemporary Vietnam.
Founded in 1754, Columbia University is one of the world's leading institutions for education , research, and innovation. Located in New York City, it brings together a global community of scholars dedicated to solving complex challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration and academic excellence.
The Weatherhead East Asian Institute serves as a center for the study of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and modern Asia, promoting cross-cultural understanding through research, teaching, and community engagement activities.
