Covid-19 Victims Memorial: A Symbol to Remind and Educate the Young Generation

Continuing to record opinions on the construction of a park and memorial for Covid-19 victims at the 'golden land' at No. 1 Ly Thai To (Vuon Lai Ward), many students in Ho Chi Minh City expressed their agreement and hope that this will become a meaningful destination, both to remind and educate the younger generation about a special period in the country's history.

For the people of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the whole country in general, the Covid-19 epidemic is an unforgettable milestone... However, it is also during this challenging period that the spirit of solidarity and mutual love of the Vietnamese people is more strongly lit than ever. The images of doctors, volunteers, and frontline forces working day and night to fight the epidemic have left a deep impression in the hearts of the people.

For the generation of students, the memories of that time are not only about long online classes and days away from school, but also a great lesson about sharing and appreciating normal life. Because of that, the plan to build a park and memorial for Covid-19 victims at land plot No. 1 Ly Thai To (Vuon Lai Ward) of Ho Chi Minh City has received a lot of support, especially from the younger generation.

Students express their opinions about the memorial project for Covid-19 victims

Quach Thi Ngoc Yen, a student at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, said that after more than four years, the memorial is still very necessary. "Not only to commemorate the past, this place also helps connect the community, remind people to cherish their present life and be more aware of protecting public health. I hope the project is designed simply and solemnly, with green space, a memorial area, a document exhibition area and a community activity area, both a place of remembrance and a humane destination of the city," Yen shared.

Sharing the same opinion, Tran Le Ngoc Loi, a student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that if invested in the right direction, the memorial would not only be a destination for city residents but could also become a place of gratitude for people across the country and international tourists. According to Loi, a simple but meaningful project would help remind people of difficult times and at the same time affirm the spirit of solidarity and humanity of the Vietnamese people.

As for Tran Thanh Nha, a student at Van Lang University, she said that the memories of the pandemic days are still vivid in her mind. Nha shared that her most memorable memory was the time she had to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, studying and taking exams online at home. Despite going through many difficulties, she realized that after all, she cherished life more than ever. "I hope the memorial is designed simply but solemnly, symbolically and attached to green space. In addition, this place can be developed into an open exhibition space, not only to commemorate but also to educate the younger generation about the spirit of overcoming difficulties and kindness," Nha expressed.

Le Nguyen Truong, a student at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, expressed his deep agreement with the city's policy and said that for medical students, the memorial could become a meaningful extracurricular destination, helping the next generation better understand the contributions of doctors and nurses who participated in the frontline of the fight against the epidemic. Truong hopes that the project will be designed simply but deeply, an open space with trees, a lake, and an area with names or symbols engraved in memory of those who have passed away. In addition, according to Truong, there should be an area to display documents, images and stories... about the days of fighting the epidemic, and at the same time organize annual memorial activities to spread humanistic values.

In addition, many students also believe that the memorial should harmoniously combine memorial elements and community living spaces, both as a place for people to come to offer incense and remember, and as a cultural meeting place, educating about the spirit of living beautifully and responsibly.

According to Thanh Nien , many opinions agree that if it is planned in harmony with urban green space, combining memorial areas, document exhibitions and community activities, the Covid-19 Victim Memorial will not only be an architectural work but also a symbol of gratitude, memory and education for the younger generation.

Ho Chi Minh City invites people to contribute ideas for the project
