On November 8, along National Highway 19 through Dong Xuan Commune ( Dak Lak Province), traces of damage caused by the massive flood during and after Storm No. 13 (Kalmaegi) were still evident as hundreds of hectares of crops along the river were devastated.

The remaining mud and rubbish shows that the water level on the night of November 6 reached 3-4m, thousands of houses, committee headquarters, schools, and post offices were deeply flooded.

Small hamlet flooded with mud

Mud is still thick, in many places staff, teachers and people are cleaning up in the face of power and water shortages. Pumps are being used to pump water out of the schoolyard and headquarters, before sweeping and cleaning.

Right after storm No. 13 had just dissipated, people in many localities in Dak Lak had to cope with a fierce flood that came during the night. The water rose quickly, sweeping away property and disrupting life. Now people are busy cleaning up in a chaotic scene.

On the morning of November 8, Mrs. Phan Thi Nhi (70 years old, Tan Binh village, Dong Xuan commune) was still cleaning up mud in her house that had just been deeply flooded. She said she had never witnessed such a terrible "double disaster":

"As soon as the storm passed, the water rushed in, submerging and sweeping away many things. In just a moment, the water rose to our waists, and my whole family had to run upstairs to take shelter for the night. The next morning, the water receded, but the mud was all over, and everything was damaged," she lamented.

In the same situation, Mr. Do Van Men (69 years old, same village) said: "On the night of November 6, the storm had just ended when the water suddenly rushed in, and in just a few minutes it was up to our chests. My whole family had to climb onto the roof to escape. The water rose nearly 3m, sweeping away all our belongings, leaving nothing but chickens and ducks."

According to the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Dak Lak province, immediately after the storm, the department directed educational establishments to urgently clean up and repair damage in time to welcome students back to school early next week.

"The Department is asking localities to specifically report the extent of damage to each school for synthesis and to ask for direction from the province. Schools that cannot be repaired in time must also report immediately to have a temporary plan, so as not to interrupt students' learning," Ms. Xuan said.

According to Ms. Xuan, the goal is that by November 10, schools will have basically completed cleaning and repairing minor damage so that students can return to school safely.
