According to AFP news agency, 3 days of fighting here have left more than 100 people dead and nearly 1,000 injured, causing overload at hospitals. In addition, many bodies have not been found.
On the same day, Mr. Vincent Karega, Rwanda's Ambassador-at-Large to the African Great Lakes region, announced that the M23 armed group is likely to control more territory in eastern DRC and even move deeper into the country.
Mr. Karega also affirmed that M23 will advance into South Kivu, "because Goma cannot be the final point, unless this force can dialogue and negotiate effectively with the government in Kinshasa".
Asked whether M23 could advance beyond eastern DRC, the ambassador said: "This is possible because all the military forces and capabilities are concentrated in Goma. The rest of the country is not as protected as Goma."
The fierce fighting has exacerbated a humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has been plagued by armed groups for decades following the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is also rich in tantalum, tin, tungsten and gold, which are used in the production of smartphones and other electronic devices.
