According to Al Jazeera , Claudia Sheinbaum, a 62-year-old climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, will serve a six-year term leading the country, ending in 2030.

Beginning her address as head of state, President Sheinbaum stated that, as a mother, a grandmother, a scientist, and a woman of faith, she would stand with the Mexican people in their efforts to improve the rights and status of women – who are often disadvantaged in society.

In her solemn inauguration ceremony in Mexico City, she declared: "Now is the time of transformation, now is the time of women."

The first female head of state in North America affirmed that, during her term, she would focus on social welfare policies, poverty reduction, and economic stability, including curbing gasoline and food prices, expanding support programs for women and children, supporting business investment, and building housing and railway systems.

Regarding attracting investment, President Sheinbaum emphasized that both domestic and international businesses can have complete confidence in the Mexican market.

Her government will implement the best investment incentives and prepare the infrastructure to welcome new waves of investment, so that this second-largest economy in Latin America continues to be a safe destination for international investors.

Regarding efforts to prevent and suppress the activities of drug cartels currently controlling large areas in Mexico, the new president affirmed that he will not tolerate irresponsibility in this arduous fight and that the North American nation will step up intelligence and investigation activities to improve the effectiveness of crime suppression.

In June, the National Electoral Institute (INE) announced the official vote count results showing that in the general election on June 2nd, with 59.7% of the votes, Claudia Sheinbaum won, far ahead of her two rivals, Sochitl Gálvez and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, who received 27.4% and 10.4% of the votes respectively.

Furthermore, according to INE, with a lead of 32.3 percentage points over her closest rival, candidate Sochitl Gálvez, Sheinbaum also became the president-elect who received the most votes in Mexican history.

Born in 1962, Ms. Sheinbaum is an environmental scientist who previously worked at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the organization that received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Before running for office, Ms. Sheinbaum served as Mayor of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023.
