Marking Matthew M Williams' final collection for the fashion house.
Earlier this month, it was announced that Matthew M Williams would be leaving Givenchy after three and a half years – marking the latest development for the luxury fashion house’s creative director. With Williams set to officially depart on January 1, 2024, the designer has unveiled his final collection for the French luxury house with the Pre-Fall 2024 season.
Across both menswear and womenswear, the collection continues Williams’ focus on subverting dressmaking techniques. Yes, the clothes are imbued with a quintessentially classic rhythm. But the Illinois native looks at how to update these silhouettes, whether it’s through mixed fabrication methods, innovative washes, or streamlined yet subtle design details. “It’s the same story as always; in making menswear for myself, the clothes I feel need to exist,” Williams tells Vogue Runway. “ Exploring themes of shape and material that I’ve been pursuing since I came to Givenchy: dyeing clothes, treating luxury and not-so-luxury materials with dressmaking techniques.”
For menswear, the collection is both classic and modern, always combining suits or tailored suits with outerwear such as windbreakers, coach jackets and casual hooded coats. With this, he creates a versatile everyday outfit that can move between the office, dinner or an evening event. The womenswear has a slightly more elevated character, including dresses, tailored suits and a range of slim-fit dresses.
Despite being a pre-season collection, Williams' last appearance at the house was a reminder of the fusion of Givenchy's fashion heritage with his streetwear style.
