Google unexpectedly experiences a serious outage, OpenAI malfunctions.

According to CNBC, Google's cloud computing system unexpectedly experienced a widespread outage on June 12th, disrupting numerous major internet services, including OpenAI, Shopify, GitHub, Twitch, and many other technology platforms.

According to Google Cloud's status page, the outage began at 10:51 AM ( Pacific Time), with the message: "We are experiencing a service issue with multiple GCP (Google Cloud Platform) products. Our technical team is investigating."

By the end of the day, Google confirmed that customers were still being affected to varying degrees and there was no specific timeframe for a fix.

This incident is seen as a major blow to Google, as the company is striving to close the gap with major rivals like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure in the cloud infrastructure race.

Google Cloud is one of Alphabet's fastest-growing areas, particularly driven by high demand for artificial intelligence (AI) services.

Shopify, a major Google Cloud customer, posted on the X platform that they “have noticed some services being affected.” OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, said they experienced issues with single sign-on (SSO) and other login methods. “ Our engineering team is working to mitigate the problem,” OpenAI wrote.

According to data from the tracking site Downdetector, over 13,000 error reports related to Google Cloud were recorded around 11:30 AM, before gradually decreasing in the afternoon.

Besides Google Cloud, a number of other services were also affected, including: Twitch (owned by Amazon), GitLab, CoreWeave, Elastic, LangChain, Replit, Mailchimp (owned by Intuit), and GitHub (owned by Microsoft).

This incident raises serious questions about the stability and reliability of cloud infrastructure, especially as many businesses and AI services increasingly rely on platforms like Google Cloud.
