Contributing to building a roof over the headboard.

Thanks to voluntary contributions from the community, many charitable housing construction groups in the province have helped hundreds of poor and near-poor households have stable housing. Each house built is a beautiful story of sharing and responsibility towards the community.

In the early days of summer, the weather was scorching hot, but the members of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Charity Group in Vinh An commune were still diligently cutting iron bars to build house frames. Some carefully checked the house dimensions meticulously recorded in their notebooks, while others carried the iron bars to the cutting machine. Everyone was drenched in sweat, but their faces always showed enthusiasm and joy. For them, despite the hard work, helping those in difficult circumstances have a sturdy home brought them an indescribable joy.

The charity group, founded by Mr. Vo Van Ut (Ut Ngo) - Head of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Association of Vinh An commune, has 30 core members, but can mobilize more than 100 people when needed. Everyone contributes their labor, their resources, and their free time. Despite their diverse backgrounds, ages, and professions, all members share a benevolent spirit. For decades, Mr. Tai and the members of the charity group have built thousands of houses for the poor and needy throughout the Mekong Delta, from the Mekong Delta to the Eastern and Central Highlands regions.

Most of the houses built by the Hoa Hao Buddhist Association's charity group in Vinh An commune are constructed with zinc frames and corrugated iron roofs, ensuring the "three sturdy" criteria. The zinc and corrugated iron are sourced cheaply from local people. The rest is utilized by the team depending on each household's circumstances, using whatever materials are available to reduce costs. From surveying and designing models to supervising construction and logistics, the charity group, led by Mr. Ut Ngo, organizes everything systematically. Therefore, the houses are built solidly and completed in a short period of time.

Mr. Ut said that to help the right people and ensure the quality of the construction, the unit always coordinates closely with the authorities and conducts thorough surveys before implementation. Besides enthusiasm, the factor that helps the team operate sustainably is transparency. For the team members, the joy of the people when they have a new home is the motivation that keeps them committed to this work, making all fatigue disappear.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nghi (88 years old), who has been involved in charitable work with Mr. Ut Ngo since the beginning, shared: "We always want to build as many charitable homes as possible, so that the poor and lonely can suffer less. We help those in need, but before that, we always have to survey and verify to help in the right way, to the right people, and in the right place."

Since the beginning of the year, charitable organizations, in coordination with the Fatherland Front and the Chau Phu commune government, have built and renovated nearly 20 houses to help poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged households stabilize their lives.

The dream of a sturdy, spacious house has come true for the family of Mr. Bui Van Truoc, residing in Binh Dien hamlet, Chau Phu commune. His family recently received a solidarity house built by Charity House Construction Team No. 3 of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Association of Chau Phu commune. From now on, his family will no longer have to live in a dilapidated, temporary house. “I am so happy to receive support to build a sturdy house like this. I will try my best to maintain this house well and work hard to have a better life,” said Mr. Truoc.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tham, Head of the Representative Board of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Church in An Giang province and also Head of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Management Board in Chau Phu commune, said that after the merger, the Hoa Hao Buddhist Management Board in Chau Phu commune continues to maintain 4 charitable house-building teams (8 to 15 members per team). “Members of these teams not only mobilize resources from benefactors but also directly work with local authorities to conduct on-site surveys, participate in planning construction, mobilize manpower and materials, and directly carry out construction to ensure that each house, when completed, meets quality standards and the living needs of each family,” Mr. Tham said.

Mr. Pham Van Hung, head of Charity House Construction Team No. 3, said: “Witnessing the joy of poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged households having new homes, we understand that supporting the construction of solidarity houses has profound humanitarian significance, reflecting the tradition of mutual support and compassion of our nation. We believe that with these new homes, people can work with peace of mind and strive to improve their lives. As long as we have the strength and people still need our help, we will continue this meaningful work.”
