Newcastle secured a crucial 2-0 win over Chelsea, marking the Magpies' sixth consecutive win at St James' Park. More importantly, Newcastle moved up the table and have a great chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League.
Newcastle started the game with a bang, Sandro Tonali scoring after just two minutes from Jacob Murphy's pass, the Italian midfielder beating Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez before slotting home. The hosts continued to dominate the opening 15 minutes, making it difficult for Chelsea to build on their attacks. Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy both had chances to extend their lead but failed to convert, while Bruno Guimaraes also wasted a chance with a volley wide.

Alexander Isak also had a chance to score but was saved by goalkeeper Sanchez. Chelsea had their first shot on target in the 21st minute from Cole Palmer but it was not converted. The visitors continued to pose a threat when Moisss Caicedo had a shot but could not score. Things got worse for Chelsea when Nicolas Jackson was sent off after a VAR review for violent conduct, leaving the visitors with a man down from the 36th minute.
The lack of a man made it even harder for Chelsea to get going. The second half saw fewer clear-cut chances, although the game remained very open. Isak tried to get lucky with a volley but failed to find the net. Goalkeeper Nick Pope made a brilliant save to keep out Marc Cucurella's long-range effort.

Chelsea were forced to play more recklessly as they were trailing and a defeat would have seen them drop out of the top five. The visitors created a number of dangerous chances but failed to score, while Guimaraes and Barnes missed chances to extend Newcastle's lead.
It looked like the visitors would go on to win by a narrow margin, but Guimaraes finally scored the decisive goal in the 90th minute to give Newcastle a 2-0 win. Defeat at Newcastle ended Chelsea's five-match winning streak in all competitions, pushing the Blues out of the top five if Nottingham Forest beat Leicester.
