The survey polled 18,500 residents in cities around the world , asking them about the welcoming and kind nature of the people in their neighborhoods. The results showed Hanoi was among the top 20 friendliest cities globally, alongside Chiang Mai (Thailand), Abu Dhabi and Dubai (UAE), and many other destinations in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Australia.
Time Out states that the rankings are based not only on hospitality, but also take into account factors such as green spaces, art, culture, and happiness levels, aiming to paint a comprehensive picture of the vibrancy and livability of each city.
Porto (Portugal) topped the list, with 85% of residents describing their neighbors as friendly and welcoming. The city also scored highly for beauty, happiness, and quality of life, and was recently named “World’s Leading City Destination” at the World Travel Awards 2025.
Following closely behind is Spain, with Bilbao in second place, alongside three other cities: Madrid, Valencia, and Seville, which also feature in the ranking.
Medellín – Colombia's second-largest city – ranked third, thanks to its vibrant atmosphere, diverse cuisine , and the openness of its people; 69% of residents said visitors would be warmly welcomed.
Hanoi's inclusion on the list not only reinforces the city's international appeal but also showcases the image of a warm and hospitable capital – something many visitors share they felt from the very first moments they set foot in Vietnam.
