According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ha Tinh, the prolonged heavy rains accompanied by whirlwinds that occurred in recent days have caused serious damage to agricultural production in the area, especially rice. As of 5:00 p.m. on May 11, more than 1,780 hectares of rice had fallen, mainly concentrated in the districts: Huong Son with nearly 400 hectares, Can Loc with nearly 270 hectares, Thach Ha with more than 250 hectares, Ha Tinh City with more than 150 hectares...
What is worrying is that most of the affected rice areas are in the important development stage, from milky to waxy stage. Rice lodging at this time has the potential to reduce yield, affect the quality of the rice at the end of the season and cause great difficulties for harvesting.

In Thach Ha district, one of the localities that suffered heavy damage, heavy rain combined with strong winds destroyed more than 250 hectares of spring rice, distributed in the communes of Hong Loc, Luu Vinh Son, Phu Luu... In that situation, the People's Committee of Thach Ha district promptly directed specialized departments and offices to closely coordinate with the authorities of the communes to urgently inspect and specifically assess the level of damage to each type of crop.
Mr. Vo Ta Binh - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment and Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Crops and Livestock of Thach Ha District said that the locality is focusing on guiding farmers on timely technical measures to respond. Key solutions include: clearing the flow to quickly drain flooded areas; at the same time, depending on the specific situation of each field, giving appropriate recommendations to help rice plants recover and minimize losses.

In Ha Tinh City, heavy rain and wind in recent days have also caused more than 150 hectares of rice to fall. This situation mainly occurs in the fields on the outskirts of villages, areas receiving the main wind direction and where the rice is good and has large plants, directly affecting productivity and output. Mr. Tran Van (Doai Phu village, Tuong Son commune, Ha Tinh City) shared: "My family has 6 sao of rice, fortunately most of it is over 80% ripe. I have proactively contacted the harvester, just waiting for the rain to stop to harvest immediately, because leaving it in the field for another day is more worrying."
Immediately after grasping the damage situation and facing the complicated weather developments, the People's Committee of Ha Tinh City quickly issued a document directing communes, wards and related units. The city requested to mobilize maximum human resources and means to support farmers to overcome the consequences. In particular, localities need to base on the tide to open sluices, spillways, and drain water as quickly as possible, especially in the Cau Su spillway area (Tran Phu ward), ensuring that the fields dry early for timely harvest. The city leaders also assigned officials to go directly to the grassroots level, coordinate with localities to direct and support farmers to effectively respond to adverse weather conditions.
According to the general assessment from localities, this year's spring rice has grown quite evenly, with concentrated flowering and is mainly in the waxy ripening stage. However, the increasingly extreme climate change situation, especially the storms at the end of the season, is seriously threatening the rice yield of farmers. Typically, the rain accompanied by strong winds and storms occurred in the past few days.

Mr. Nguyen Tong Phong - Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Livestock (Department of Agriculture and Environment) advised: “According to the forecast of the Ha Tinh Hydrometeorological Station, in the coming days, the province is likely to continue to experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms. To minimize damage to productivity and quality of spring crops, the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities are requested to direct and urge people to regularly monitor weather developments to proactively take timely response measures. It is necessary to focus on clearing the flow to minimize localized flooding, avoiding affecting the growth and development of crops".
The Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Livestock gave special attention: “For areas of fallen rice, instruct people to erect trees and tie 4-5 clumps of rice so that the rice can continue to accumulate dry matter in the grain, limiting the rate of damaged or germinated rice, thereby minimizing yield losses. For areas of ripe rice, people need to take advantage of favorable weather to quickly harvest to minimize possible losses due to the weather.”
