TPO - Leaders of Hau Giang province recently held a meeting with investors and contractors regarding the progress of two expressway projects, one on the north-south axis and the other on the north-south axis of the Western region, passing through the province.
Hau Giang province has two expressway projects passing through it, with a total length of approximately 100km. These include the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway (longitudinal axis) of 63km and the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway (horizontal axis) of 37km. To date, the province has basically completed the compensation, support, and resettlement work for these projects.
Mr. Mai Van Tan, Director of the Hau Giang Department of Transport, the investor of component 3 of the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway project, said that the project has currently disbursed over 1,400 billion VND, reaching over 51% of the allocated capital. The project's progress is currently about 9% behind schedule.
According to Mr. Tan, the reason for the project's delay is that the contractor has only been able to focus on constructing bridges with access roads. In package 2, the service roads are not yet fully accessible, and the small canals and waterways, along with many rural traffic bridges, prevent large equipment from being moved to the construction site…

According to the contractor's representative, despite local efforts to clear the land, construction is affecting the irrigation system for local residents. Continuing construction would disrupt the irrigation system, impacting agricultural production. Furthermore, the project is still facing difficulties with sand for leveling. The contractor is committed to accelerating the construction progress of the bridges along the route and ensuring disbursement according to schedule.
According to the contractor's representative, they have only achieved 30% of the allocated disbursement target for this year due to a lack of sand for construction along the route. While reserves are good at the mines on the Tien River, the planned utilization is in the 2026-2030 period, so they are requesting permission to exploit sand reserves during the project's construction phase ( 2021-2025). The contractor will focus on installing girders for 12 bridges along the route and completing 16km of service roads… to ensure progress and complete disbursement.
Regarding the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project, Mr. Tran Van Thi - Director of the My Thuan Project Management Board (the investor) - stated that the project will be completed by the end of 2025. From now until the end of the year, contractors must complete the roadbed load testing and bridge construction on the main route.
Currently, contractors are focusing on accelerating construction on the site; however, the project is still facing difficulties regarding sand supply. The project has received additional sand transferred from the horizontal expressway. However, according to Mr. Thi, the sand distribution only reaches over 1,000 m3/day, and from the beginning of 2025, contractors will return the transferred sand to the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway project.
Construction is underway on the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project, specifically the section passing through Vi Thuy district, Hau Giang province. |
Mr. Dong Van Thanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hau Giang province, stated that the expressway projects passing through the province are key projects. Bringing these projects into operation soon will shorten travel time between localities within the province and between Hau Giang and other provinces in the region. The locality will coordinate with relevant parties to share the common difficulties regarding the shortage of sand materials.
According to Nghiêm Xuân Thành, Secretary of the Hau Giang Provincial Party Committee, Hau Giang always stands alongside and considers the contractor's tasks as the province's own. All parties need to focus all resources with the highest determination to quickly disburse public investment funds and ensure the timely completion of the two expressway projects.
The Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project (part of the North-South expressway project in the East, phase 2021-2025) is 110km long, passing through 5 provinces/cities (Can Tho, Hau Giang, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang, Ca Mau), with a total investment of over 27,500 billion VND.
The Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway project is 188km long, passing through 4 provinces/cities ( An Giang , Can Tho, Hau Giang, Soc Trang), with a total investment of nearly 44,700 billion VND. These are two key national transportation projects and the largest-scale projects currently in the Mekong Delta.
