Currently, the stage of establishing tactical and technical requirements for the construction of this new type of intercontinental ballistic missile is being completed.
This is the type of missile expected to replace the Bulava missile currently in service, sources in the Russian Defense Ministry and the military -industrial complex said.
The new missile will become the main weapon of the Russian Navy's future generation of nuclear-powered strategic missile submarines. The missile submarines themselves will be based on the missile design, on the "missile submarine" principle.
“As a rule, the development of weapons and submarines goes on in parallel. But weapon designers always work at a faster pace. And the designers of the launch vehicles are perfecting the submarines so that they can use these weapons,” former submarine commander Rear Admiral Vsevolod Khmyrov told Izvestia.
"We need missiles that can serve for another 25-30 years, because now we need to think about new-generation ships," military researcher Dmitry Boltenkov added. That is also the time when the Bulava submarines will reach the end of their service life, according to the expert.
Earlier, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, said that the new missile must be able to overcome any missile defense system, have high accuracy and increased flight range. Experts noted that the missile's characteristics will largely determine the shape of the next generation of submarines.
