Hamas' al-Qassam Brigades said on May 26 that they had launched a major rocket attack on Tel Aviv on the same day.
The force's statement said the attack was in response to Israel's attacks on Gaza that caused civilian casualties.
According to the Times of Israel , this is the first time in the past 4 months that Hamas has attacked Tel Aviv. Sirens sounded in this city.
Hamas Al-Aqsa TV said the rocket was launched from the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military (IDF) said Hamas launched eight rockets from the Rafah area in the southern Gaza Strip, where Tel Aviv is conducting a ground operation. The IDF said it shot down several of the rockets. The attack caused no injuries.
According to Reuters , the raid shows that Hamas still has the resources and ability to fire long-range rockets despite the Israeli army's fierce attacks on Palestinian forces from the air and on the ground for more than seven months.
Meanwhile, Hamas spokesman Abu Ubaida said on May 26 that the force captured Israeli soldiers during fighting in Jabalia in northern Gaza on May 25.
"Hamas members lured Israeli soldiers into a tunnel and ambushed them," Ubaida said. He said a number of Israeli soldiers were killed, wounded and captured.
The IDF later denied Hamas' claim, insisting that no arrests had taken place.
After more than seven months of fighting in Gaza, mediators are still trying to find a way to bring Hamas and Israel to the negotiating table.
The Gaza Health Authority says nearly 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive, the majority of them civilians. Israel began its offensive in Gaza in response to Hamas's surprise raids on Tel Aviv-controlled areas last October, which left 1,200 people dead and 250 taken hostage.
