Hoping for a breakthrough in 2025, athletes will benefit.
Yesterday (January 13), Mr. Dang Ha Viet, Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Education, stated that previously, the state budget allocated to the sports sector was used to cover expenses such as salaries, pocket money, training, competitions, and performance-based bonuses, but there was no allocation for Tet bonuses. A decree regarding Tet bonuses for athletes and coaches is expected to be issued this year.
The Vietnamese national team received a large bonus, so they will have a comfortable Lunar New Year celebration.
This is good news for thousands of Vietnamese athletes and coaches because they put in so much effort and sweat in training and competition, but not everyone achieves high results or receives rewards to have money to spend during Tet (Lunar New Year).
A female track and field athlete said that she has been training and competing for over 10 years, but is outside the top ranks for national medals, so she doesn't receive performance-based bonuses. Her local wages are also low, so she has to compete in amateur and open competitions to earn extra income to make ends meet. "Only athletes who are officially employed by the state receive Tet bonuses, but as far as I know, very few athletes are officially employed. Every year, as Tet approaches, people ask how much I'll get, and I can only smile and shrug it off. Some of my colleagues have to sell goods online to earn extra income near Tet, and some even have to borrow money from friends to send home to their parents for Tet preparations. Thinking about it, I feel sorry for myself and my colleagues," the athlete shared.
TAKEN FROM SOCIALIZED SOURCES
Ho Chi Minh City is a leading unit in activities to care for the lives of athletes and coaches, especially during Tet (Lunar New Year). Mr. Nguyen Nam Nhan, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, said that because there are no state regulations on Tet bonuses for athletes, coaches, and artists, the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City mobilizes sports federations through social mobilization efforts to care for athletes and coaches in difficult circumstances.
"We will be giving Tet gifts to approximately 130 athletes, coaches, and artists in difficult circumstances. The costs for this care will be covered by fundraising events and business outreach, with the hope that these athletes, coaches, and artists will have a warm Tet holiday after a year of hard work. In addition, some sports federations are encouraged to reward and give Tet bonuses to athletes and coaches through socialized funding," said Mr. Nguyen Nam Nhan.
With his bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, weightlifter Le Van Cong received a total prize money of 235 million VND, including 50 million VND as a bonus from the Vietnamese Paralympic team, 85 million VND as a state-mandated bonus, and 100 million VND from his managing unit in Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, Le Van Cong also received individual awards from several businesses and individuals for his efforts to overcome his limitations and bring glory to Vietnamese Paralympic sports.
The AFF Cup champions are "well-off".
Despite not receiving a Tet bonus, the Vietnamese men's national football team still enjoyed a prosperous Tet holiday thanks to a "shower of bonuses" following their victory in the 2024 AFF Cup. According to incomplete statistics, the team received over 40 billion VND in bonuses. This included 300,000 USD (approximately 7.6 billion VND) from the Southeast Asian Football Federation, 7.2 billion VND from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), 5 billion VND from the State Capital Management Committee, and over 1 billion VND in bonuses according to state regulations (40 million VND per player for 26 players)... Many businesses and entrepreneurs also gave large bonuses to the team. The bonus distribution varied depending on each member's contribution, categorized into levels A, B, and C. Even the player receiving the lowest bonus (who didn't play a single minute in the AFF Cup) could receive several hundred million VND.
