The Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA) said on May 30 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the SKAO Observatory (SKA Observatory) to participate in the SKA telescope project.
SKA (Square Kilometer Array) is the largest radio telescope construction project in the world's history, deployed in Australia and South Africa to serve large-scale astronomical and space observation, with a total budget of up to 3,000 billion won (2.18 billion USD). Korea will invest 34.5 billion won (25 million USD) in this project.
The SKA telescope possesses superior features in resolution, speed and sensitivity compared to current devices, so it is expected to be able to observe faint radio signals from the early universe for use in studying the origin of the universe and searching for life in outer space.
KASA said that through the signing of this MoU, Korea has the same status as other members of SKAO to participate in the project, while creating a platform to send domestic experts to participate in the construction and operation of SKA and help businesses participate in bidding for items in the project.
The agency is currently in the process of consulting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Legal Affairs Agency to gain full membership in the SKAO. Once it becomes a full member, South Korea will have voting rights in important policies of the organization.
KASA Director Yoon Young Bin affirmed that he will actively support Korean research institutions and businesses to have the opportunity to enter the global cooperation ecosystem through this project, thereby contributing to the expansion of human scientific knowledge, such as clarifying the origin of the universe.
