Mr. Nguyen Van Binh's household (46 years old, Song Hai village) had 13 cages with 3,500 sea bass, 1-3 years old, all died. The unexpected incident caused Mr. Binh's family to lose about 400 million VND.

Similarly, the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Loc (57 years old, residing in Song Hai village) suffered losses of about 2,000 sea bass, barramundi and snapper.

"We invested capital and effort in raising some fish, some for several years, some from the beginning of the year. The fish died just before harvest, leaving us penniless. The family had to scoop them up and sell them for cheap to salvage some of their assets," Ms. Loc said sadly.

This morning (October 6), the government mobilized forces to help people harvest fish and bring them ashore to sell to salvage their assets.

A leader of the People's Committee of Thach Son commune said that Song Hai village has 56 households raising fish in cages and rafts on Nghen river. The households suffered a total loss of about 50 tons of fish.

"The cause is being clarified by the relevant authorities," he said.

Some fish cage farmers said that due to prolonged rain and floods, a large amount of water poured into the Do Diem sluice. When this sluice was discharged, the water environment changed suddenly, causing the fish to die en masse.
