FIFA is facing numerous questions ahead of the 2026 World Cup amid Iran's (already qualified) involvement in a conflict with the United States, co-hosting the tournament.

Under current FIFA regulations, there is nothing preventing Iran from playing in the United States, despite the country being under military action by the Trump administration.
Notably, Iran is currently on the list of countries banned from entering the US under the immigration restrictions imposed by US President Donald Trump. However, this ban may exempt Iranian players, staff, and their families from participating in the 2026 World Cup.
However, Iran may still avoid playing on American soil at the world's biggest tournament. The 2026 World Cup will be held in three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The West Asian team can only avoid playing in the US if they are drawn into Group A, with the group's matches scheduled to take place in Mexico.
If Iran finishes top of Group A, they will remain in Mexico to play the Round of 16 and Round of 8 matches. However, if they advance further, the West Asian team will have to play in the United States. Historically, however, Iran has never progressed beyond the group stage at the World Cup.
FIFA has yet to comment on Iran's situation. The world's most powerful football body is expected to consider options before the group stage draw, scheduled for December.

This decision was considered extremely difficult for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has a close relationship with President Trump.
Mr Infantino and the FIFA Council will have the final say on the group stage, but FIFA's Competitions Organising Committee will also have a say in the process.
The committee, which includes members from Canada, Mexico and Iran and is chaired by UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, had previously decided in 2022 to separate Ukraine and Belarus from the same group in UEFA competitions.
