Pirelli uses virtual technology to select F1 racing tires

With decades of experience in motorsport , especially in F1, the Italian experts at Pirelli sports tire company have to collect data and cooperate with F1 teams to ensure that the rubber can withstand the stresses and wear on many types of road surfaces.

Historical data from previous races played a key role in the selection process, according to Auto News.

However, any changes such as the addition of a new layer of asphalt to the track surface, are likely to impact the choice of racing tyres.

However, the conundrum remains: How does Pirelli navigate the complex process of selecting tyre compounds for each F1 race, matching the real-world conditions at each track.

The answer is that Pirelli has created a virtual tire model, from data mined by sensors mounted on racing cars combined with data transmitted from 115 telemetry channels on the track, transmitted to the R&D center in real time.

This data warehouse, which Pirelli calls the “connected tire” concept, becomes the basis for determining the optimal tire compound for the upcoming race, where the company will supply tires to the racing teams.

Pirelli explains the concept, highlighting the potential of connected tires to facilitate superior response in adverse situations, transmitting vital data about grip and the forces acting between the tire and the road surface.

This proactive information exchange allows the vehicle to anticipate and react effectively to unstable conditions such as icy or water-filled road surfaces.

The McLaren Artura is currently the only race car with this connectivity, but Pirelli envisions a future where this technology permeates the high-end and luxury car sector.
