A meaningful art event
Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission Dinh Thi Mai commented on the large-scale outdoor lacquer painting exhibition “Independence Spring”: This is a meaningful artistic event, and at the same time makes an important contribution to the propaganda work, educating revolutionary traditions, fostering patriotism and national pride for cadres, party members and people, especially the young generation. In the coming time, the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission will continue to encourage and create conditions for artistic creations that reflect the breath of the times, closely linked to national history, so that culture truly becomes an important endogenous strength in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.

Nearly 20 large-scale lacquer paintings have successfully demonstrated the smooth combination of traditional materials and modern creative thinking, recreating the image of President Ho Chi Minh and the emotional and touching historical stages of the nation.
This is a testament to the enduring vitality of folk art when it is continued and developed by the younger generation, while affirming the role of fine arts in spreading the noble values of independence, freedom and the desire for peace .

"Uncle Ho reading the Declaration of Independence" has an area of about 20 square meters.
Comrade Dinh Thi Mai's comments are a recognition of the value of an art exhibition and express a consistent viewpoint: Culture, when associated with history and national spirit, will become an endogenous strength and the spiritual foundation of the nation.
Especially, in the context of increasingly deep international integration, artistic creations that are inspired by the times but still imbued with national identity like the works at “Independence Spring” are proof of the path that Vietnamese culture is heading towards, both preserving, developing and spreading.

The exhibition’s appeal is clearly demonstrated through its social impact. According to the Ho Chi Minh Museum’s leadership, it is estimated that every day there are between 5,000 and 6,500 visitors to the exhibition, from students to officials, veterans, researchers and about 200 to 300 international visitors. This shows that the public is not indifferent to traditional art. On the contrary, when it is renewed in contemporary language, that art is still able to touch the hearts of a large audience.
Dr. Vu Manh Ha, Director of the Ho Chi Minh Museum, emphasized that the exhibition “Independence Spring” is a special and meaningful artistic activity. For the first time, a large-scale lacquer painting series with 17 elaborately composed works, vividly recreating historical stages, glorious victories of the nation and unique images of beloved President Ho Chi Minh by a young artist, has been introduced to a wide audience nationwide.

The highlight of the exhibition is the fusion between traditional lacquer materials and modern visual thinking. Lacquer is a complex painting technique, requiring many elaborate steps such as cutting, shaping, grinding, coating, etc.
The combination of traditional materials with contemporary visual language has helped Chu Nhat Quang's works both preserve national character and carry the breath of the times.
Thanks to the innovation in expression, the paintings are no longer just historical illustrations, but have become powerful visual experiences, evoking deep emotions and pride in the nation's journey to independence and freedom.

vividly depicts historical stages and glorious victories of the nation.
The dedication of the 9x artist
In addition, the exhibition “Independence Spring” has received many positive reviews from experts and artists. Colonel, journalist Ho Quang Loi, Vice President of the Vietnam Digital Communications Association shared his emotions when admiring all 17 works: “When looking at the paintings, I see the heroic spirit, love for history, and the journey towards independence clearly expressed by Chu Nhat Quang. These works contribute to enhancing patriotism and national pride in each of us, while honoring the value of history and the value of Vietnamese culture”.
Journalist Ho Quang Loi especially appreciated the dedication of a young 9x artist who has never experienced war, but has found inspiration in the flow of national cultural history. This is proof that historical memories continue to flow in the spiritual veins of today's generation. With the exhibition "Sacred Marks" in the past and now "Independence Spring", Chu Nhat Quang is gradually asserting his own style in lacquer art.

According to the perspective of artist Luong Xuan Doan, Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, this exhibition is not only an artistic achievement, but also a "turning point" for the young generation in Vietnamese fine arts.
He analyzed: to paint about history, especially great figures like President Ho Chi Minh, the artist must have a passionate love for the nation and Vietnamese history. Only intense love can create deep emotions, which can then be distilled into artistic material. For Quang, choosing this difficult subject right from the beginning of his painting career is very encouraging.
Traditional lacquer techniques are extremely difficult, from the processing of the canvas to the stages of grinding, polishing, and coating... However, he has witnessed Quang and his group of young colleagues diligently working on the canvas with admirable passion and dedication. According to him, if he can overcome the challenges of artistic language and material techniques, Chu Nhat Quang will become a representative face of contemporary Vietnamese fine arts in the future.
Painter Luong Xuan Doan, Chairman of Vietnam Fine Arts Association

Writer Nguyen Quang Thieu, Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association, was initially concerned when a young artist took on the subject of Ho Chi Minh. He frankly expressed: “When I learned that Chu Nhat Quang would paint about Uncle Ho, I was really worried. But when I saw the large-scale works depicting leader Ho Chi Minh with my own eyes, I was able to get rid of my worries. I felt that President Ho Chi Minh in Chu Nhat Quang's paintings was not only an image of the past, but also as if he were living with us today, in these very years.”
According to writer Nguyen Quang Thieu, that is the greatest success of art: reviving the past through independent creativity, new emotions, new thinking, new language. He believes that Quang's works have contributed to opening up "a different level of perception" about President Ho Chi Minh, not only through historical memories, but also through the spread of morality and ideology in contemporary life. This allows the audience to both admire the works and nurture their faith and confidence in the unchanging values of the nation.
According to the latest news, the highlight of the exhibition is the large, unassembled, double-sided lacquer painting “Uncle Ho reading the Declaration of Independence” which has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest unassembled lacquer painting. This is not only a technical record but also a testament to the aspiration of a generation of young artists to bring traditional Vietnamese art to the world.

Affirming the value of national art and history
Behind the success of the exhibition “Independence Spring”, besides the personal efforts of young artist Chu Nhat Quang, there is also the mark of his teacher, his constant companion, who both inspired his ideas and gave advice on every technical detail of Quang, his father - Meritorious Artist Chu Luong and his brother-in-law - artist Nguyen Thanh Tung.
In each of Chu Nhat Quang's works at this exhibition, there are their silent contributions, silently helping, supporting, giving advice in the research, exploration, innovation and nurturing the creative aspirations of the 9x artist.

Painter Nguyen Thanh Tung recounted that, since his childhood, when he was only 6 years old, his parents sent him to study painting at the Hanoi Children's Cultural Palace. On the way to school, he often saw large portraits of Uncle Ho placed at the Trang Tien and Hang Bai intersections or on the roof of the State Bank. From that time on, he always asked himself how to preserve the sustainability of paintings about Uncle Ho, especially those displayed outdoors. He could not fulfill that wish, but now Chu Nhat Quang has done it.
During the time he sent Chu Nhat Quang to the US to study, painter Nguyen Thanh Tung not only taught him techniques, but more importantly, he passed on to Quang his feelings and desire to create works about Uncle Ho. Painter Thanh Tung said: "I have not yet realized that dream, but I have passed it on to Quang. And I am so happy to see Quang make my aspiration come true."

Nguyen Thanh Tung and his brother-in-law have been diligently researching large-size lacquered canvas materials. He has traveled to many wood craft villages, studied traditional shipbuilding techniques, and studied materials to find the ideal durability.
After dozens of trials, failures and re-does, he finally successfully created large, durable panels, enough for Chu Nhat Quang to unleash his creativity.
What I learned about the two resistance wars of the nation, along with field trips and historical epics, became a source of inspiration. I wanted to recreate the image of beloved Uncle Ho, typical figures and historical sites to arouse national pride from the perspective of my generation.
Artist Chu Nhat Quang
For a 9X artist, choosing history as a creative material is a big challenge. Quang has no direct experience with war, but in return, he has a love for Vietnamese history, and a desire to use the language of youth to breathe new life into the past. It is this bold choice that makes the difference, bearing the strong personal mark of a young contemporary artist.

is no small challenge.

With 17 large-scale lacquer works, Chu Nhat Quang has demonstrated his persistent artistic labor. Not stopping at the technical aspect, Quang also aims to spread spiritual values: evoking love for the homeland, gratitude and the desire for peace in each viewer.
The large-scale lacquer exhibition "Independence Spring" will end on September 10.
