Thousands of monks and Buddhists walk to carry Buddha

On the afternoon of May 11, after the Buddha bathing ceremony at Dieu De Pagoda, thousands of monks, nuns, and Buddhists in Hue walked more than 4 km to bring Buddha to Tu Dam Pagoda.

Early in the afternoon, thousands of monks, nuns, and Buddhists in Hue city went to Dieu De pagoda on the Dong Ba river in Gia Hoi ward, Thuan Hoa district to participate in the Buddha bathing ceremony and Buddha procession organized by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Hue city.

At 5:30 p.m., the Buddha bathing ceremony and procession begin. Monks, nuns, and Buddhists stand solemnly on both sides of the Dieu De Pagoda grounds to watch the ceremony.

Most Venerable Thich Duc Thanh, Standing Member of the Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, and the Executive Committee of the Hue City Buddhist Sangha, burned incense and performed a prayer ceremony, praying for the glory of the nation, the longevity of the Dharma, world peace, and the happiness of all living beings. Next, the Most Venerable performed the traditional Buddha bathing ceremony, commemorating the birth of Buddha Shakyamuni.

According to legend, the Buddha was Prince Siddatha Gotama, born on the morning of the full moon day of the month of Vesak in Kapilavatthu (near the border between northeastern India and Nepal). His father was Emperor Suddhodana, his mother was Queen Maya. Seven days after giving birth to the prince, the queen passed away.

After the traditional Buddha bathing ceremony, all the venerable monks, nuns, and Buddhist followers carried the statue of the newborn Buddha from Dieu De Pagoda to Tu Dam Pagoda.

The procession went straight on Bach Dang Street, crossed Gia Hoi Bridge, went straight on Tran Hung Dao Street, turned left across Truong Tien Bridge, turned right on Le Loi Street, turned left on Dien Bien Phu, turned left on Su Lieu Quan and stopped at Tu Dam Pagoda.

After three bell and drum beats, the Buddha procession departed from Dieu De Pagoda towards Tu Dam Pagoda. In the photo, the procession passed Bach Dang Street along the Dong Ba River.

Thousands of Buddhists in the traditional blue robes of Buddhists stood on both sides of the procession's route, clasping their hands in prayer to celebrate Buddha's birthday.

The flower car decorated with a dragon in front carries the statue of the infant Buddha from Dieu De Pagoda to Tu Dam Pagoda.

Wearing traditional blue ao dai, hundreds of female Buddhists holding national and Buddhist flags participated in the Buddha procession. According to the route, the procession will walk more than 4 km.

Monks in costumes participate in the dance "Six Offerings of Flowers" in the Buddha procession.

On Buddha's birthday, monks will dance "Six Flower Lantern Offerings" to offer to the Triple Gem, to make offerings to the Buddha, to pray for national peace and prosperity, the longevity of the Dharma, the salvation of the dead and the peace of the living, and the happiness of all beings.

The Buddhist procession passed the Martyrs' Monument at the corner of Le Loi Street and Truong Tien Bridge. This is the place that marked a major event in the Hue Buddhist struggle movement in 1963.

Dozens of specially decorated flower cars with images of Buddha parked on Le Loi Street joined the procession.

The procession passed through Le Loi Street towards Tu Dam Pagoda. At many points where the Buddha procession passed, fireworks were set off to celebrate Buddha's birthday.

At around 7pm, the procession arrived at Tu Dam Pagoda. According to the program, on the morning of the 15th day of the 4th lunar month, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Hue city will hold a Buddha's Birthday ceremony at Tu Dam Pagoda. In the evening, flower floats from pagodas and Buddhist prayer halls will parade through the central streets of Hue city for people to admire.
