CD Projekt Red, the developer behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 games, has denied rumors that it is about to be acquired by Sony, according to Gadget360 . The rumor started to emerge recently, when Sony said that the company was looking to push the games it had previously acquired to a whole new level.
The rumor first emerged from a Discord post by leaker Liz, who claimed that PlayStation was planning to buy CD Projekt Red and that Days Gone 2 was in development. Days Gone franchise director Jeff Ross has also denied Liz's rumor.
CD Projekt Red will remain independent
CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński has confirmed that nothing will change for the developer and that he wants to remain independent in the industry. According to him, CD Projekt Red currently has many projects in development, so speculation about their acquisition is quite understandable, as this could give the studio more resources to quickly complete its work. One of the projects CDPR is working on is the "Phantom Liberty" expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 .
Meanwhile, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) acquired Firewalk Studios last month to help build a major AAA multiplayer game for PS5 and PC. The Japanese gaming company also has a series of major acquisitions under its belt, including the acquisitions of Bungie, Housemarque, and industry heavyweights Nixxes Software and Bluepoint Games.
