After Oscar, Emma Stone will appear in a new thriller from A24

This is the latest project featuring two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone from the uniquely visionary director Ari Aster, following last year's controversial Beau Is Afraid starring Joaquin Phoenix.

Aster said he had the idea for Eddington since the release of his haunting 2018 film Hereditary. He described it as a black comedy and even saw it as his first project.

Aster will write and direct the film, which he will produce with Lars Knudsen under the Square Peg banner. It is the sixth project from Square Peg and A24, joining Hereditary, Midsommar, Aster's Beau Is Afraid , Kristoffer Borgli's Dream Scenario , and the upcoming Death of a Unicorne starring "Wednesday" Jenna Ortega.

Dream Scenario marked the English-language debut of acclaimed Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli, and earned lead actor Nicolas Cage a Golden Globe nomination. Death of a Unicorne also began filming last summer but has yet to set a release date.

Darius Khondji, the Oscar-winning cinematographer behind Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu's Bardo , is reportedly attached to the project, marking his first collaboration with Aster. Production on the film is set to begin this week.

Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but IndieWire reports that it will follow a small-town New Mexico sheriff who's trying to climb the career ladder, and explore the tragedy of a couple who "accidentally" arrive in the town after running out of gas. While they're greeted warmly during the day, the nightmare begins at night...

Aster first collaborated with Phoenix on last year's surreal black comedy Beau Is Afraid . He previously made his name directing the hit Swedish horror film Midsommar , starring Florence Pugh, before breaking out with 2018's Hereditary , starring Toni Collette. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, the film grossed more than $82 million, remaining A24's highest-grossing film until Everything Everywhere All at Once .

The actors who will join Joaquin Phoenix have been previously announced, including Pedro Pascal - who was nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe for The Last of Us , Emma Stone who just won her second Oscar for Poor Things , Austin Butler - who played Elvis Presley and recently participated in the blockbuster Dune : Part II ...

Last year's Beau Is Afraid was a flop for A24, costing $35 million to make but grossing just $11.9 million at the global box office. Aster also admitted to being disappointed by the lukewarm reception from critics. So audiences are eagerly awaiting the director's grand return in a star-studded film like Eddington.
