Don't let consumers turn away
On May 30, 2025, on social networks, a post by account holder Jonny Lieu (with 29,000 followers) appeared and was quickly shared with the content denouncing a number of serious violations by the leaders of CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company, occurring at CP Fresh Shop My Xuyen, My Xuyen Town, My Xuyen District, Soc Trang Province).
Images of sick pigs have been circulating on social media on Facebook by Jonny Lieu in recent days. Photo from Facebook Jonny Lieu |
Specifically, the content of the post mentioned the issue: "Every day, the store regularly mixes sick pigs and sick chickens, and some pieces of pig smell bad and bring them back to Fresh Shop to instruct employees to sell them to the market in Soc Trang . "
In particular, according to this article, sick pig and chicken products that do not meet sensory requirements (red spots, abscesses, pus) or have been cut into pieces or have a foul smell are still sent to Fresh Shop for sale...
A representative of CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company also confirmed that the photo was taken in the early morning of March 26, 2022, at Dung Nga slaughterhouse. Two pieces of pigs with severe dermatitis with a total weight of 72.7 kg were then destroyed on the spot according to the correct procedure, used as aquatic feed and a record was made.
Perhaps, the image clearly showing the date, time, location, and red spots clearly visible on the two pork carcasses said it all. It made many consumers shudder even though CP explained that the diseased pork was not for consumption but used as aquatic feed. Many people even shared it on social networks and asked: "Should the family still have a tray of CP meat and a bag of CP sausage?"
Some distributors have announced a temporary suspension of product sales. Photo: Tara Mart |
Yesterday afternoon and this morning, a number of food stores have temporarily stopped supplying CP pork products, and said they will wait until there is an official announcement from the authorities. According to representatives of these systems, the temporary suspension is a precautionary measure to wait for more information to verify and ensure consumer safety.
Meanwhile, some large distribution systems said that because there is no official conclusion from the authorities, based on CP's commitment to quality control, businesses are still importing goods. However, they are also carefully monitoring developments related to the "drama" of CP selling sick pork. However, according to these supermarkets, the purchasing power of CP pork has decreased sharply. According to a survey by reporters of the Industry and Trade Newspaper at some large supermarkets in Hanoi , CP pork is still on the shelves, but very few customers buy it.
When the photo, the stamp can not lie
Along with the food safety issue, what consumers are concerned about is the rectangular seal stamped on the two pieces of diseased pork.
Sample cancellation stamp for livestock is specified in Appendix IV of Circular 09/2016/TT-BNNPTNT dated June 1, 2016 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment). Photo: MH |
According to the provisions of Circular 09/2016/TT-BNNPTNT dated June 1, 2016 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) regulating slaughter control and veterinary hygiene inspection, Section 2, Chapter III of the Circular stipulates the sample of slaughter control stamps used at slaughterhouses for domestic consumption.
Specifically, a rectangular stamp (80mm long, 50mm wide) with the word “KSGM” engraved in the middle is used to stamp on cattle carcasses for domestic consumption. The oval stamp will be stamped on cattle meat that must be treated with veterinary hygiene, with the word “VSTY TREATMENT” engraved inside. For cattle meat that must be destroyed, a triangular stamp will be stamped on the carcass, with a height of 22mm in the middle of the stamp, with the word “DESTRUCTION” engraved inside.
Thus, according to Circular 09, pieces of suspected sick pigs spreading on social networks must be stamped with an oval or triangular shape, instead of a rectangular shape.
However, the image of the sick pig was stamped with a rectangular shape - the stamp of a controlled slaughter stamped on the carcass of cattle for domestic consumption? This does not rule out the possibility that this pork product may have been supplied to the market.
Responding to a reporter from the Industry and Trade Newspaper about this, Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) - said that the rectangular stamp is only used for products that are eligible for circulation on the market, meaning the product has passed quarantine and is safe for consumers. Therefore, according to the image and stamp on the carcass of the sick pig, the veterinary staff at the slaughterhouse stamped it in violation of regulations.
The question is which unit rolled the slaughter control stamp for the suspected diseased pig pieces and whether the veterinary control work was in accordance with regulations and whether there were any loopholes?
In order to clearly identify the cause and avoid the risk of substandard meat products "slipping" through the control system and reaching consumers, on June 3, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien sent a document to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine and requested this department to preside over and coordinate with the competent authorities of Hau Giang province, Soc Trang province and relevant agencies and units to review, verify and clarify the case of veterinary officers stamping quarantine stamps in violation of regulations on sick pigs of CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company; which unit they belong to; handle responsibilities according to regulations and related contents.
In addition, to promptly reassure consumers and prevent negative impacts on the production and supply chain of livestock and poultry meat, this morning (June 4), Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien also signed Official Dispatch No. 2763/BNNMT-CNTY requesting the Ministry of Public Security to investigate, verify, clarify information spread on social networks and strictly handle organizations and individuals who violate the law (if any).
CP Vietnam was granted an investment license in 1993 as a 100% foreign-owned company. In 2008, CP Vietnam Livestock Company Limited was officially transformed into CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company. According to CP Foods' financial report, Vietnam will be the company's largest foreign market in 2024. Revenue from Vietnam accounts for about 21% of total revenue, equivalent to 122 billion baht. This shows that Vietnamese consumers are helping CP to do business more successfully.
However, experts also say that customers are not loyal to brands, they are loyal to product quality. Consumers choose food thanks to the commitment to food quality. But when the quality declines, the customer's trust also shakes or even collapses. Therefore, quality should never be sacrificed for short-term profits. Product quality must always be put first to maintain customer loyalty.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien also emphasized the viewpoint of protecting and supporting businesses that do business honestly and comply with the law. However, it is absolutely forbidden to discharge waste into the environment, slaughter sick pigs, and spread disease. There will never be tolerance, lax management, or tolerance for acts that disregard the law and discipline, and disregard the lives and health of more than 100 million people. |
