Expanding the area of growing onions according to VietGAP standards

(GLO)- After 2 years of implementation in Hoi Son and Phu My Tay communes (Gia Lai province), the model of growing shallots according to VietGAP standards has shown clear effectiveness, increased productivity, safe products, and high profits. This is the basis for the locality to expand the area and build sustainable consumption links for farmers.

Mr. Huynh Viet Hung - Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center - said: Onion is a crop that brings high economic value in the communes of Hoi Son, Phu My, Phu My Tay, Phu My Nam, Vinh Quang... Every year, people maintain an area of more than 995 hectares, with an average yield of 5.8 tons of tubers/ha.

However, in the past, many households used agricultural materials in the wrong dosage and process in production, leading to poor quality products and high costs.

To improve productivity and quality, from 2023, the Center will deploy the model "Producing shallots meeting VietGAP standards" on an area of 4 hectares, with 18 households in 2 communes of Phu My Tay and Hoi Son participating.

The center supports 50% of the cost of purchasing seeds and essential materials; trains and assigns specialized staff to coordinate with commune agricultural staff to provide technical guidance; and coordinates with functional units to take soil and water samples before planting and check product quality before harvest.

“Up to now, the entire area in the model has been granted VietGAP certification. The yield in Hoi Son commune reached 6.38 tons of tubers/ha, 6.4 quintals/ha higher than the control; in Phu My Tay commune it reached 5.82 tons of tubers/ha, 6 quintals/ha higher. The profit reached 110 - 200 million VND/ha.

In 2025, the Center will continue to coordinate with Phu My Tay commune to maintain 1 hectare according to the model; at the same time, guide farmers in the two communes to produce nearly 60 hectares of shallots according to VietGAP standards" - Mr. Hung added.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Chien - Vice Chairman of Hoi Son Commune People's Committee - said: The commune has 4 households in Dai Khoan village participating in the model with a total area of 2 hectares. During the implementation process, the Center closely coordinated with the commune and functional units to provide technical guidance and supervise the use of pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with regulations. Thanks to that, the productivity was high, with a profit of over 100 million VND/ha.

As a household participating in the model, Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan (Dai Khoan village, Hoi Son commune) shared: My family has 5 sao participating in the model. Thanks to the guidance, I know how to fertilize and use pesticides properly. With an output of 2.6 tons of tubers/year, after deducting expenses, my family earns a profit of 40 - 50 million VND/year.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu Huong (Dai Khoan village) said: Participating in the model, I fully recorded the fertilization and pesticide use for 2.5 sao of shallots. The shallots grew well, with a high survival rate and yield. Although the model has ended, I still apply VietGAP procedures to continue growing shallots, ensuring safe products and favorable output.

In Phu My Tay commune, 14 households participating in the model were also excited that the products were safe and favored by traders. Mr. Lai Van Tho (Phuoc Tho village) said: Previously, people produced in the traditional way and were not familiar with the VietGAP process.

In 2024, thanks to the support of the Center, people have mastered the techniques from land preparation, sowing, fertilizing, watering, and pest control. Thanks to that, the shallot plants grow well, have fewer pests and diseases, and have higher productivity and profits.

According to Mr. Huynh Viet Hung, in order for the model to be truly replicated, in the coming time, the Center will continue to coordinate with units that grant VietGAP certification, monitor and provide technical guidance to people.

However, the locality needs to build a chain of product consumption links, especially through cooperatives, enterprises, and reputable business households to consume products, stabilize prices, and motivate farmers to maintain and expand production areas according to VietGAP standards. Thereby, products are safer for consumers, ensure the health of farmers, and contribute to environmental protection.
