Senior Lieutenant Tran Ngoc Linh is currently the "foster father" of Nguyen My Hang, a 7th grade student at Tran Quoc Toan Secondary School (Ha Long ward).
We met Lieutenant Tran Ngoc Linh on the day he and his teammates completed a long patrol at sea. His skin was tanned by the sun and wind, but the young officer's eyes lit up with joy as he prepared to visit his "adopted children". Tran Ngoc Linh shared that sea trips can last a month, but after each voyage, the first thing he does is visit the children his unit has adopted.
Having graduated from the Naval Academy and worked at the Border Guard Squadron 2 (Provincial Border Guard) since 2023, Senior Lieutenant Tran Ngoc Linh is one of the youngest officers in the unit. Tran Ngoc Linh confided that it was his contact with the circumstances of disadvantaged students that the unit regularly sponsors that urged him to take action. “When I come into contact with the circumstances of the students, I feel responsible. It is not only the unit's duty, but also the sentiment of a senior. Seeing the students progress every day is the greatest joy for me and my teammates,” Senior Lieutenant Linh confided.
Following him, we visited Nguyen My Hang (born 2013), a 7th grade student at Tran Quoc Toan Secondary School. As soon as she saw the familiar figure of her “foster father”, Hang happily ran out to greet her, chattering away about the first days of the new school year.
Senior Lieutenant Tran Ngoc Linh visited and encouraged the family of Nguyen My Hang, in Ha Long ward.
Hang's situation is very special, her father is blind from birth, and her mother's arm is weak and cannot do heavy work. The family's already difficult life became even more difficult when they had to raise 3 children to study. Understanding that, Border Guard Squadron 2 has sponsored and supported Hang under the program "Helping children go to school - Adopted children of the border guard station". "Since my father Linh often came to teach me and tell me stories about going to sea, I no longer feel self-conscious and have studied better. I will try my best to study well to be worthy of that care and attention" - Nguyen My Hang shared.
The care of Senior Lieutenant Linh and her teammates has given the little student strength to overcome difficulties. For many years, Hang has been an excellent student and is determined to strive to become an excellent student this school year.
Like Hang, Le Ngoc Phuong Anh, a 10th grade student at Hon Gai High School, also considers “father Linh” as a family member. With two siblings, her father died early and her mother has no stable job, Phuong Anh was at high risk of having to drop out of school many times due to difficult circumstances. However, thanks to the help and encouragement of her “foster fathers” from the border guards, last school year she achieved the title of excellent student and passed the entrance exam to her dream school.
Learning more, we learned that, as Secretary of the Border Guard Squadron 2 Youth Union, Senior Lieutenant Linh not only directly takes care of the "adopted children" but also arouses and spreads the movement throughout the unit. He proactively built a plan, assigned union members to take turns tutoring the students sponsored by the unit, creating a regular and disciplined activity. On days off, he and his teammates also brought the children back to visit the unit, visit the border guard ship, tell stories about the sea and islands, thereby further cultivating love for the homeland and country.
Commenting on the young officer of the unit, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hung, Political Commissar of Border Guard Squadron 2, said: Comrade Linh is a young, energetic, enthusiastic officer with a high sense of responsibility in both professional duties and union work. The model of caring for "adopted children" that he and the Youth Union have undertaken is very effective, in-depth, and has truly become a bright spot of the unit.
