According to CBS News , officials confirmed that a pilot safely ejected before the F-35 fighter crashed near Lemoore Naval Air Station, about 59 km south of Fresno, at around 6:30 p.m. on July 30 (local time).
"The pilot ejected and was taken to hospital by helicopter. No other personnel were affected," NAS Lemoore said.
Images from the scene showed the plane burst into flames after crashing, with thick black smoke billowing into the air.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The US Navy said the aircraft belonged to the VF-125 Strike Fighter Squadron, also known as the "Rough Raiders", which is responsible for pilot training.
According to NDTV, the F-35 is a fifth-generation, single-seat, single-engine, multi-role stealth fighter designed to perform air superiority, strike, electronic warfare and intelligence gathering missions.
Manufactured by US defense contractor Lockheed Martin, the F-35 is the world's only advanced long-range stealth fighter.
The F-35 fighter jet manufacturer has yet to make any statement about the crash.
