The Evening Standard reveal that Wrexham are ready to make a shock move for De Bruyne and Vardy, who will leave the club on free transfers at the end of the season. In recent years, Wrexham have recruited a number of experienced Premier League players to play in the lower divisions of English football.
The likes of James McClean, Steven Fletcher and Ben Foster have all shone at the Racecourse, helping Wrexham achieve three successive promotions in three seasons. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has also hinted at the possibility of signing Vardy and De Bruyne.
"Wrexham have always kept an eye on free transfers and players coming off contract and will continue to do so," Parkinson admitted. "We will build our squad on a 'no superstars, no egos' philosophy when we enter the Championship next season."
"It's very expensive to sign quality players in the Championship, and at the higher levels, I think it's hard for people outside of football to imagine. When you go up, you always need more quality," he said.
De Bruyne and Vardy have announced they will leave Man City and Leicester on free transfers this summer. Both players have attracted interest from other Premier League clubs. However, if they join Wrexham in the Championship in 2025/26, it would be a shock.
Wrexham are the 'phenomenon' of English football, having achieved an unprecedented three consecutive promotions and will play in the English First Division for the first time since 1982. The club's two owners, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have played a big role in this success. Since buying the Welsh club in 2021, they have spent heavily to help the club dominate its lower-league rivals financially.
