In the qualifying rounds of the 2nd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament - THACO Cup 2024 (TNSV THACO Cup 2024), all matches applied the "cooling break" rule. This rule, long-standing in effect since the International Football Federation (FIFA), allows players to rest for 3 minutes between each half, so they can drink water and avoid exhaustion due to the heat.

Many teams also took advantage of this time for coaches to direct or adjust their on-field tactics. The University of Economics and Law team effectively utilized the "cooling break" rule in their match against the Vietnam Aviation Academy team at the Youth Student Tournament, dramatically changing the course of the game to secure the biggest victory right after the opening day of the qualifying round.
Previously, the players of the University of Economics and Law team entered the game somewhat tensely, allowing the opponent, the Vietnam Aviation Academy team, to press them. However, in the middle of the first half, after the referee allowed the players to rest to rehydrate, the situation on the field completely changed. As soon as the game resumed, the University of Economics and Law team unexpectedly scored two consecutive goals thanks to Thanh Dat (6) and Trong Duc (11) in the 27th and 29th minutes to lead 2-0.
In the second half, thanks to the psychological advantage of a leading goal, the players of the University of Economics and Law team played even more confidently and scored 2 more goals. In which, Trong Duc (11) scored his second goal in the match when he successfully converted a penalty in the 53rd minute and Ho Si Tien (5) scored the 4-0 goal in the 65th minute. The Vietnam Aviation Academy team scored a consolation goal thanks to Lam Van Men (7) in the 70th minute.
"Actually, the 'cooling break' rule helped the University of Economics and Law team turn the tide of the match. This was our first time participating in the Youth Student Tournament, so the players were tense and had a hard time getting into the game. Fortunately, during this period we played with great effort to prevent many scoring opportunities for the opponent. If the Vietnam Aviation Academy team had scored first, the situation might have been different."
The coaching staff of the University of Economics and Law team gave timely instructions to the players during the halftime break.
"During the precious 3-minute break for watering in the first half, we were able to instruct the players to remain calm, maintain the rhythm and spacing of the team. We needed to reorganize the game more tightly. Thanks to that, when the game resumed, the University of Economics and Law team capitalized on two scoring opportunities and dramatically changed the situation," shared Coach Pham Minh Triet of the University of Economics and Law team after the match.
Meanwhile, player Ho Si Tien (5), captain of the University of Economics and Law team, expressed: "The break was just right in the middle of the first half, besides getting water, it also helped us calm down. The coach also gave timely instructions, helping us play according to the set strategy. This is really an experience, because it is the first time the University of Economics and Law team has participated in the Youth Student Tournament and played the first match, so it is unavoidable that there is pressure and tension. This win will help us be more confident in the upcoming matches in group 2."
