Old farmer Vu Van Tam - the first person to successfully implement the bamboo rat breeding model in Da Pal commune, with gray hair, feeding bamboo rats and excitedly introducing to us the opportunity to come to the bamboo rat breeding model of his family. Mr. Tam said that three years ago, he and his wife saw bamboo rats for the first time. His children learned about this model through the media with the hope that their parents could do more leisurely work than the hard farming and cultivation as before. With their positivity and efforts to learn, the family's bamboo rat herd has now grown to more than 100 bamboo rats of various types.

“After our family proposed the idea of implementing a breeding model for bamboo rats to the Da Pal Commune Farmers’ Association, we received enthusiastic support and attention from the Association. With the plan to test raising 10 small bamboo rats for breeding, the initial cost was 20 million VND. The Commune Farmers’ Association supported the family with 10 million VND to buy breeding animals and regularly sent agricultural extension officers to the family’s house to provide technical guidance for the family to implement the model,” Mr. Tam shared.

According to Mr. Vu Van Tam, the demand for bamboo rats is now quite high because the meat quality of this animal is very delicious and is one of the specialties of the mountains and forests. This rodent is also very easy to raise, requires little care and grows strongly if the breeder knows how to take care of it properly. At first, Mr. Tam also encountered many difficulties due to lack of experience, causing the bamboo rats to contract skin fungus. Over time, he continued to explore and overcome the problem, and the bamboo rats have now adapted to the current environment. According to Mr. Tam, after selecting healthy breeds, designing a reasonable cage is the first priority. Specifically, the space must be airy, quiet and limit direct light as much as possible, because bamboo rats are nocturnal animals. Therefore, on the family's 100 m2 area, Mr. Tam used ceramic tiles joined together into small squares, 60 x 60 cm on the side, to build 70 small cages placed close together. Building cages by joining ceramic tiles will help the bamboo rat's development space stay dry, clean and solid, preventing harmful animals such as rats and snakes from crawling in.

“The main food source for the bamboo rats is bamboo and sugarcane available in the home garden, so it does not cost much and also ensures a safe food source. The bamboo rats will start to reproduce after about 7-8 months, giving birth to 3 litters each year, from 3-5 babies, the babies can be separated from their mother after 1.5-2 months, and can be sold for breeding after about 3 months. From 2022, the family is still mainly breeding and selling pairs weighing 1 kg or more/pair for 3.5-4 million VND. On average, 4-5 breeding pairs are sold per month to people in the district who are in need. With the current strong growth rate of the bamboo rats, in the near future, the family plans to sell meat to traders and restaurants,” said Mr. Tam.

According to Mr. Vu Duc Thinh - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Da Pal commune, in recent times, the Farmers' Association of the commune has proactively implemented many practical activities to support its members; in which, the outstanding model of breeding bamboo rats of Mr. Vu Van Tam's household is showing many positive signs, creating a positive impression on other farmers in the area by developing the family economy in a new direction. Considering that this is a model with high economic efficiency, the Farmers' Association of the commune will proactively maintain and replicate it to the people in the coming time.
