Promoting advantages from forestry and short-term crops

By the end of 2024, the commune's poverty rate decreased to 23.3%, near-poverty rate was 31.3%, down 4.48% compared to the previous year. This result is thanks to the locality's promotion and mobilization of people to diversify production and create local livelihoods.

People in Yen Cu commune (Cho Moi) mostly develop their economy from forest planting, in which cinnamon and star anise are the main crops.

As a purely agricultural commune, Yen Cu has identified agriculture and forestry as the main direction of development. In recent years, the commune has focused on developing valuable crops such as cinnamon and star anise. Thanks to the policy of land and forest allocation and technical support for care, the area of cinnamon and star anise planted in the whole commune has now reached about 800 hectares and is continuing to expand.

With an average selling price of about 20,000 VND/kg of fresh cinnamon and 30,000 VND/kg of star anise, many households have had a stable income and built solid houses. Typical households include: Ma Van Cuong, Nong Van Tinh in Ban Tam village, or Ms. Ma Thi Luan in Phieng Duong village.

Tobacco is a short-term crop that brings good income locally. This spring, the whole Yen Cu commune planted more than 8 hectares, exceeding the assigned plan.

In addition to perennial crops, people are also actively developing short-term crops such as ginger, squash, taro and tobacco. In particular, tobacco is considered to bring high economic efficiency, with a stable selling price of about 60,000 VND/kg after drying. In the spring crop of 2025, the whole commune planted more than 8 hectares of tobacco, exceeding the planned target.

Ms. Trieu Thi Kieu in Phieng Duong village shared: “Last year I planted 3,000m² of tobacco. Seeing that the economic efficiency is 2-3 times higher than corn and rice, this year my family expanded to 8,000m². I have now dried 10 kilns and am waiting for the company to come and buy.”

Accompanying people to escape poverty

Along with production development, Yen Cu has effectively utilized resources from National Target Programs to support people's livelihoods. From 2022 to present, the commune has implemented models such as: Caring for and improving star anise trees in the second and third years on an area of 127 hectares for about 200 households; supporting hundreds of breeding buffaloes and cows for poor, near-poor, and newly escaped-poverty households.

Mr. Luong Van Ngu's household in Phieng Duong village received livelihood support from the National Target Program with breeding cows to develop the family economy.

Mr. Luong Van Ngu, Phieng Duong village, one of the households supported by the National Target Program, said: "I was given a cow worth 18 million VND from the end of 2023. After more than a year of care, the mother cow gave birth to 2 calves. After selling 1 calf, I earned a good amount of money."

Currently, Yen Cu commune is continuing to implement the model of raising buffaloes and cows for reproduction according to the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction by 2025. Ms. Ha Thi Son, Na Hin village shared: “I have prepared the barn and will receive the breeding animals after being trained. I am very happy to receive timely support”.

Although people's lives have changed positively, Yen Cu still faces many difficulties, especially in the highland villages. Many poor households lack land for production, are not bold enough to change crops and still rely on the State's support.

Yen Cu still has many extremely difficult villages with high poverty rates such as Ban Chao, Ban Chang, and Thai Lao.

Mr. Ma Dinh Hung, Chairman of Yen Cu Commune People's Committee said: "Currently, the total number of poor households in the commune is 174, near-poor households is more than 200, the work of Poverty reduction is still a difficult task. We will continue to strengthen propaganda, guide people, effectively use resources, support the right subjects and regularly check and urge implementation. Along with that, encourage the development of appropriate production forms to create jobs and increase income.

With the efforts of the government and the proactive efforts of the people, Yen Cu is gradually narrowing the development gap, gradually escaping the economic "lowland", continuing to strive to gradually reduce the number of poor households according to the set target./.
