The effectiveness of the organic guava farming model.

Once a overgrown, unproductive garden, Mr. Nguyen Van Tao's garden (Quy Phuoc village, Thang Binh commune) has undergone a dramatic transformation thanks to a shift towards organic guava cultivation, providing him with a stable income.

In early May, we had the opportunity to visit Mr. Nguyen Van Tao's approximately 8-acre garden, which includes 4 acres of pear-shaped guava trees with over 300 trees currently bearing fruit. After nearly a year of care, the guava orchard is thriving, bearing abundant fruit, and showing promising initial economic results.

Mr. Tao said that in 2022, the garden was overgrown with weeds. Thanks to a 29 million VND grant from Resolution No. 35/2021 of the People's Council of Quang Nam province (formerly) on regulating the mechanism for supporting the development of garden and farm economies in the province, along with family capital, he renovated the land, invested in an irrigation system, and experimented with planting oranges and tangerines.

However, these plants did not yield the expected results.

By 2025, Mr. Tao boldly switched to growing pear guavas, with a spacing of 3 meters between each tree. He purchased the guava seedlings from nurseries in the Mekong Delta. In addition, thanks to participating in training courses organized by agricultural extension officers, he gradually mastered the techniques and improved production efficiency. After only about 6 months of care, the guava trees began to yield fruit, with each fruit weighing an average of about 0.5 kg.

Mr. Tao said: “Guava trees are easy to grow, but to achieve high yields, it's necessary to focus on caring for the root system. When the trees bear fruit, we prune the tops to concentrate nutrients on the fruit. At the same time, all the fruit is covered with bags to limit damage from fruit flies. In addition, he uses homemade biological preparations from chili peppers, ginger, garlic, and alcohol to control pests and diseases instead of pesticides. Growing guava organically is hard work, but it is favored by traders, with a selling price of about 20,000 VND/kg, and each plot yielding an income of 10-15 million VND/year.”

According to Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Head of the Farmers' Association in Quy Phuoc village, since 2022, the locality has been promoting the development of garden-based economy with 19 households participating. By 2023, 9 households received support under Resolution No. 35. After receiving support, these households continued to invest in expanding production, with Mr. Tao's guava cultivation model being one of the outstanding examples.

Currently, 12 households in the village are completing the procedures to continue receiving post-merger support policies. The people hope that the authorities at all levels will pay attention and create favorable conditions for the sustainable development of garden-based economic activities, thereby increasing their income. Mr. Tao's organic guava farming model not only brings clear economic benefits but also contributes to changing the production mindset of the people, moving towards safe and environmentally friendly agriculture.
