Principal asks parents to help poor students replace flowers on November 20th

Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School Principal wrote a letter asking parents to donate to buy health insurance for disadvantaged students instead of giving flowers on November 20.

According to Mr. Dinh Phu Cuong, Principal of Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School, District 6, the open letter stemmed from the fact that 89 students of the school were in financial difficulty and could not afford health insurance cards.

Meanwhile, every November 20th, the school receives many flowers and cakes to congratulate. These flowers and cakes can only be used for one day and then thrown away, so it is a waste. Therefore, the teacher and other teachers unanimously called on parents and donors to send flowers and gifts to support poor students.

Currently, the value of each student health insurance card is more than 680,000 VND for the whole year of 2024. The total amount needed to buy health insurance cards for 89 students is about 60 million VND.

"This is the first time the school has done this, and it has received support from parents and businesses. In just 3 days, the school received 130 million VND, equivalent to 200 health insurance cards," said Mr. Cuong, who announced that the program had been stopped. The remaining money will be used by the school to take care of disadvantaged students during the 2024 Lunar New Year.

Before Vietnam Teachers' Day this year, the Departmentof Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City and Tay Ninh Province announced that they would not receive guests, gifts or flower baskets from departments and agencies. The reason is to implement the policy of saving and fighting waste.

In Dak Lak, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Primary School asked parents not to give gifts to teachers because they did not want poor families and students to worry about this.
