Sir Alex Ferguson sat next to the MU board of directors in the final.

The 83-year-old was in the stands at San Mames to cheer on United against Tottenham, his final away game as a paid ambassador after being axed in October as part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's cost-cutting drive.

What made fans angry was that Ferguson sat next to Ratcliffe and members of the Glazer family, the largest shareholder group of MU. On social networks, many fans left angry comments such as: "Glazers and Ratcliffe got free tickets, fired Fergie and now he sits next to them", or "Seeing Fergie sitting next to Ratcliffe and Glazers makes me shiver".

Despite being cut from his £2.16 million-a-year contract, Sir Alex maintained a professional attitude as he chatted happily with Ratcliffe in the stands. "Sir Alex showed absolute respect for MU," wrote The Sun.

Under the management of Ratcliffe and INEOS, MU implemented a series of cost-cutting measures, from laying off nearly 500 employees, eliminating free meals for employees, canceling employee Christmas parties to cutting the use of private drivers and company credit cards.

Even tickets to the Europa League final were not given free to staff, forcing them to watch the match through a viewing party in England.

With the team having their worst season in Premier League history, coach Ruben Amorim was given the chance to salvage the season with a European title and a Champions League spot. However, the "Red Devils" fell 0-1 to Tottenham.
