Most recently, Nguyen Duc Phuoc released his poetry collection "Mat Bim" (Vietnam Writers Association Publishing House), which compiles approximately 60 works from 2019 to the present. Many of his works have been published in newspapers, including Dong Nai Weekend Newspaper. A special feature of this collection is that, in addition to love poems – his forte – there are also some works on the theme of the sea and islands.

A blend of tradition and modernity

The poem "Eyes of the Silk Scarf" by poet Nguyen Duc Phuoc was first published in the Literature and Arts Newspaper, issue 18, dated April 27, 2019. This love poem, written in the lục bát (six-eight) verse form, draws inspiration from the "pair of natural features" cleverly concealed by a woman's silk scarf: "Why do I hear your laughter? / Lost in your silk scarf eyes, making us love each other / I love you, I love my first love / I love you until my hair turns gray, I will still love you..."

To explain the term "bib-like eyes," Nguyen Duc Phuoc chose to quote verbatim the article "The Beauty of Young Women" (by Thu Trang, published in the Literature and Arts Newspaper, issue 19, 2019) at the end of the poetry collection. In this article, Thu Trang observes: "The words are truly elegant, but within that elegance we see a hint of sensuality; the beauty is expressed in a natural, pure way, like Nguyen Du wrote: 'A magnificent natural structure is already built'... Some say 'bib-like eyes' is a new word, but I emphasize that it is a bold word."

He is a member of the Vietnam Writers Association . Besides writing poetry, Nguyen Duc Phuoc is also known as a musician with about 50 songs composed, most of which are songs set to his own poems.

Throughout his 40-year writing career, Nguyen Duc Phuoc's poetry has been predominantly love poetry. Naturally, the image of women is always present in his poems. It's easy to see that the women in Nguyen Duc Phuoc's poetry often appear with a modern look, reflecting the vibrant realities of contemporary life. However, hidden within this is the subtle charm and traditional beauty of Vietnamese women. This includes the gentleness expressed in lines like: "Your loving words fill my mother's heart / In pain, I feel gentle / I cast off all worldly sorrows / You receive happiness on a spring afternoon" (excerpt from the poem "The White Dress You Wear, the Color of Memories"); and the image of a loving mother with her children: "In a dream at night, I met my mother / Her loving gaze / My sisters and I still cherish her now" (excerpt from the poem "In a dream at night, I met my mother").

Working in the healthcare sector as the Director of the Trang Bom Regional Medical Center, his daily work involves contact with many patients of all ages. Perhaps because of this, poet-doctor Nguyen Duc Phuoc keeps up with and adapts to the pace of modern life. And he has brought a modern touch to his poetry: "Give me a drop of dawn / Beside a cup of milk tea, I feel innocent" (excerpt from the poem "Thank You, Love"); "The silent iPhone / Closes its eyes, waiting for a night dream / If only the wifi lost signal / Messenger wouldn't smile / You are a distant horizon / I wouldn't be adrift" (excerpt from the poem "If Only").

It is the intertwining of tradition and modernity in his works, both in form (poetic forms: lục bát, free verse) and content, that makes Nguyễn Đức Phước's poetry relatable, easily touching, and imbued with a contemporary spirit.

Poet Nguyen Duc Phuoc has published several poetry collections: Sacred River (2000), Words of the Sea (2003), Thirsty Night (2008), and Nguyen Duc Phuoc's Luc Bat (2018). In 2024, he released a song collection titled When Dreams Disappear. This year, in addition to his poetry collection Eyebrow, the poet plans to release a collection of introductions and criticisms titled Wandering to Thien Cam.

Exploring new "territories"

For 40 years, Nguyen Duc Phuoc's writings have mostly been love poetry. Recently, he has begun to try his hand at a new "territory": writing about the sea and islands. This inspiration stemmed from his trip to the Truong Sa Special Economic Zone in April 2025, in his capacity as a member of the Vietnam Writers Association.

Witnessing the hardships, sacrifices, and unwavering loyalty of the naval officers and soldiers at the forefront of the waves and winds brought Nguyễn Đức Phước incredibly strong emotions. After the trip, he immediately wrote a collection of poems about Trường Sa, two of which he himself set to music, most notably "Echoes of the East Sea": "In our hearts we hear the echoes of Trường Sa / Gac Ma Island, where heroes went into battle / Their sacrifices became immortal wreaths / Forever embracing the sea of our homeland…"

Nguyen Duc Phuoc shared: “In this collection of works, I am most proud of the poem 'The Eyes of a Seaman' with verses like: 'His eyes look ahead / Towards the distant horizon / Following every second, every minute / The shadow of the invading enemy / Amidst the scorching sun and sea / His eyes always shine brightly / Amidst storms and tempests / His eyes transcend the vast ocean / He looks out towards the sea / His heart yearns for his homeland / With his parents in his eyes / With boundless love…'

In his collection of poems about Truong Sa, Nguyen Duc Phuoc has partly depicted the sacrifices and contributions of naval soldiers in the cause of protecting the sacred sovereignty of the nation's seas, islands, and continental shelf. Alongside the image of these soldiers at the forefront of the waves and winds, there is also the presence of women: "Tears fall towards the sea / I sing for you, soldier far from home on the island / My lips smile, yet my eyes are filled with tears / What embrace will hold us in this moment of parting?" (excerpt from the poem "Tears Fall Towards the Sea"); or "I want to embrace Truong Sa like you, like my mother / The warmth of affection, the closeness of closeness" (excerpt from the poem "I am infatuated with Truong Sa")....

It's no coincidence that images of women appear in poems about Truong Sa. Nguyen Duc Phuoc explains: "Coming to Truong Sa and meeting the naval soldiers, no one can help but be moved, especially during the memorial ceremony for the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the sovereignty of the islands in the vast ocean. This is most noticeable in the women on the trip; no woman could hold back her tears during those emotional moments. Conversely, no naval soldier far from home can forget the image of a woman. That is their mother, wife, sister, lover..."

The images of women in Nguyen Duc Phuoc's poems about Truong Sa not only express simple, everyday love but also a sacred love: it's not just mother-child love, sisterly love, or romantic love, but also the deep affection between the Vietnamese People's Navy and the people on the mainland. It's also a source of spiritual strength, encouraging naval soldiers to stay at sea and on the islands to protect the sacred territorial integrity of Vietnam…

Many people wondered if dedicating himself to artistic creation would distract him from his professional work in medicine. Nguyen Duc Phuoc frankly replied: “For me, both poetry and music are passions; when inspiration comes, I have to write, I can't stop. But creative work can only be done in quiet solitude, requiring space and time for contemplation. How can one create during the hurried, noisy atmosphere of working and interacting with patients? If a poetic idea suddenly comes to me while working, I will note it down as data, as a 'reserve,' and when I have time, I will nurture the emotion again to write.”

Nguyen Duc Phuoc also stated that composing poetry and music not only helps relieve work stress but also keeps him youthful and optimistic. Observing life and incorporating it into his compositions also helps him understand and connect with young people. This supports him in his work, especially in understanding the thoughts, aspirations, and work styles of young people, enabling him to better manage the medical center where he works.
