Coach Ivan Hasek was fired. |
“We are ending our cooperation with Ivan Hasek as of today,” Czech Football Federation President David Trunda confirmed on October 15. The federation also revealed the possibility of looking for a foreign coach to lead the team, while an interim coach will direct the final match against Gibraltar in November.
Hasek, 62, took charge of the Czech Republic for the second time ahead of Euro 2024, but the team was eliminated in the group stage. His pragmatic and uncompromising playing style was heavily criticized by experts. Hasek himself has repeatedly complained that Czech football no longer produces talents of the caliber of Pavel Nedved or Tomas Rosicky.
The 5-1 defeat to Croatia in June left his position in serious doubt, and the latest defeat to the Faroe Islands is seen as the final straw.
The Czech Republic are chasing a first World Cup berth since 2006, but defeat to a much-underrated opponent has left their chances in tatters.
Croatia currently lead Group L by three points and have a game in hand. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic is just one point ahead of the Faroe Islands, with both having a game in hand. This means the Czech Republic is not even guaranteed a playoff spot in March next year.
