Ulsan HD fans hope Shin Tae-yong will help the team return to the top position in K League 1 and Asia.

On August 1, Ulsan Hyundai's homepage announced the dismissal of coach Kim Pan-gon. At the same time, the club's CEO, Kim Kwang-kook, also resigned amid the crisis. Mr. Kim Pan-gon, 56 years old, was appointed to the Ulsan Hyundai coach position in July 2024 to replace Hong Myung-bo.

Since then, the reigning Korean champions have been in poor form. In the 2025 season, the team won just 3, drew 3 and lost 7 of 13 matches, ranking 10th out of 12 teams playing in the K League 1. A 1-1 draw with Gangwon on July 26 was the last straw, leading to the decision to fire coach Kim Pan-gon.

According to Yonhap , the Ulsan Hyundai board needed to change the coaching position to save the season, and coach Shin Tae-yong was chosen. The 54-year-old strategist will return to his hometown to work after more than half a decade.

Coach Shin Tae-yong was fired by the Indonesian Football Association earlier this year, mainly for non-professional reasons. After leaving Indonesia, Coach Shin Tae-yong has been busy with various jobs, including the position of Vice President of the Korea Football Association (KFA).

Here, he worked with Mr. Park Hang-seo, former coach of the Vietnam national team. Both are expected to contribute international experience to help Korean football develop sustainably. In addition to his work at the KFA, after returning to Korea, Coach Shin Tae Yong was appointed General Director at Seongnam FC. However, if he becomes the coach of Ulsan Hyundai, Mr. Shin Tae-yong will resign from his role at Seongnam FC and the KFA.
