Coach Postecoglou has the chance to help Tottenham quench their thirst for the championship. |
At the press conference after Tottenham's victory over Bodo Glimt in the second leg of the semi-final in the early morning of May 9, a reporter asked the Australian coach: "Manchester United repeatedly asserted that the Europa League could not save their season. Their coach and players all said the same. What about Tottenham? Will this title save your season?"
Postecoglou replied: “I don’t care. Why should I care what Manchester United think? What does it have to do with me? Ask the Manchester United manager why he says that. For my part, I always say that this competition is very important. You should know better than me what a title means for this club (Tottenham). The question answers itself.”
“Some people are afraid that we can actually win the title and they are trying to downplay it by talking about the club’s performance in the league. If Tottenham had had the success that Manchester United had in the past, I would have a different view. But that’s not the case here,” he continued.
Tottenham are currently 16th in the Premier League table with just three games remaining, while Manchester United are just above them in 15th place.
Both teams desperately need to win the Europa League this season, to secure a place in the 2025/26 Champions League, thereby significantly increasing revenue and attracting stars.
For Tottenham, this season's Europa League final has even greater significance, as the "Roosters" have been without a title for a long time. Tottenham's last major title came in 2008, when they beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.
