2025 is considered one of the most successful years for Vietnam's pepper industry, as export value reached a record high for the first time, creating an important foundation for export prospects in 2026. According to data from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), by the end of 2025, Vietnam had exported 247,482 tons of pepper, bringing in over US$1.66 billion.

Notably, although export volume decreased slightly by about 1.2% compared to 2024, the export value saw a breakthrough growth of 26%. The main reason for this surge in value for the pepper industry was the sustained high global price level throughout the year. The sharp increase in average export prices became a decisive factor, compensating for the decline in production due to the shrinking cultivated area after a prolonged period of low prices.

According to preliminary data from the Vietnam Customs Department, this growth trend shows no signs of slowing down in the first quarter of 2026. In the first half of December 2025 alone, export turnover increased by 17.5% compared to the same period the previous month. These figures demonstrate the growing attractiveness and economic value of Vietnam's "black gold" on the global agricultural map.

Currently, the global pepper supply market share structure is strongly skewed towards Vietnam. With a 36.3% share of the world market, Vietnam has far surpassed other major competitors such as India (15.8%) and Brazil (15.1%). Amidst significant production declines in countries like India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka due to unfavorable weather and disease outbreaks, Vietnam continues to play a pivotal role in regulating global supply.

Regarding the market, the United States continues to maintain its position as the largest import partner for Vietnamese pepper. In the first two months of 2026, although the total volume of pepper imported by the US from other sources showed signs of slowing down, the volume of pepper imported from Vietnam alone increased by 19.1% in quantity and 21.2% in value. Currently, Vietnamese pepper accounts for 80.74% of the total imports of this demanding market, a significant increase compared to 60.93% in the same period last year.

Besides traditional markets such as the UAE, China, and Germany, Vietnamese pepper is seeing new bright spots in Canada with a dramatic 292.5% increase in volume in the first quarter of 2026. Diversifying its markets to 42 countries and territories is helping the industry minimize risks and maximize the advantages of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).

According to Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, in the overall pepper export landscape, black pepper continues to assert its role as a strategic commodity, accounting for an overwhelming 66.3% of total exports. The first quarter of 2026 witnessed a strong breakthrough for this commodity, with production reaching 43.8 thousand tons, equivalent to 288.7 million USD, an increase of 42.2% in volume and 38.8% in value compared to the same period in 2025.
